ST. LOUIS (AP) — The new president of Saint Louis University is being formally welcomed to the job at a Chaifetz (SHAY-fetz) Arena inauguration.

Fred Pestello is the Jesuit school's first permanent lay president in its nearly 200-year history, a distinction he also held at his previous job as the first secular boss at Le Moyne College in upstate New York. He succeeds the Rev. Lawrence Biondi, who held the job for 26 years before retiring.

The ceremony begins Friday with a 9 a.m. procession and continues with a formal program at 9:30 a.m.

Pestello was elected by university trustees as the school's 33rd president in March and took office on July 1. He spent nearly 25 years as a sociology professor and administrator at the University of Dayton, another Catholic college.
