HAMILTON, Mont. (AP) — A section of a popular wilderness road in the Bitterroot National Forest has been closed by multiple washouts.
The U.S. Forest Service says the washouts were caused Thursday by heavy rains. Three mudslides are blocking a 2-mile stretch of road about 7 miles west of Nez Perce Pass and 4 miles east of the historic Magruder Ranger Station.
Forest officials plan to clear the slides and repair the road as soon as possible. But heavy equipment will have to be brought in and it will likely take road crews several days.
The 101-mile road corridor links Darby, Montana, and Elk City, Idaho. It was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's.
