CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval says he's optimistic that Nevada lawmakers will reach a deal to fund the state's budget with only slightly more than a month to go in the Legislature. The popular Republican governor tells The Associated Press he remains confident that legislators will see the need to increase revenue and fund K-12 education in Nevada.

FORT POLK, La. (AP) — The military says a U.S. Army paratrooper from Las Vegas has died during an airborne training exercise at Fort Polk in Louisiana. A news release from the soldier's division, the North Carolina-based 82nd Airborne, says 19-year-old Pvt. Joshua Phillips died Thursday. Army spokeswoman Lt. Col. Cathy Wilkinson says Phillips died while parachuting during an exercise to simulate the seizure of an airstrip.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. (AP) — A 61-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of embezzling more than $850,000 from a business on Lake Tahoe's north shore. Washoe County sheriff's deputies say Pamela Kircher of Carnelian Bay, California, was arrested Thursday in the case involving an Incline Village business. She's accused of embezzling the money over a seven-year period.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Police say an innocent bystander was shot and killed as she arrived for work in Las Vegas. Investigators say 24-year-old Cassandra Lee Cassidy of Las Vegas had just arrived for work late Friday when she was approached outside by two females who asked for help. A car with multiple people then drove up and shots were fired from it, striking Cassidy. Detectives say they believe Cassidy wasn't targeted.
