SALT LAKE CITY -- The Utes are now just eight days away from their season opener against Utah State at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Wednesday's practice went injury-free, according to head coach Kyle Whittingham.
Whittingham is still not naming his starting quarterback; he says he'll wait until game day.
"Why would we? There's no point," Whittingham said. "We'll know and they'll know, but there's no point. It deflects some of the attention off whoever it is and let them just focus on getting ready for the game."
In Wednesday's two-minute drill at the end of practice, Terrence Cain was running with the ones and looked sharp. However, it's hard to assess the quarterback situation since the media is only allowed in the final 30 minutes of practice.
Offensive coordinator Dave Schramm told Sportsbeat after practice both Cain and Jordan Wynn got equal work with the ones and twos Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the entire team is getting tired of going against each other in practice.
"It's tough to get a read when you play against each other for so long. There's nothing to gauge it against. Whittingham said. "Are we very good on defense, which means the offense sputters a little bit? Or are we not very good on offense, which makes the defense look good? I mean, it's hard to tell. I've always had a hard time. Until you line up and play a couple of games, it's tough to decide."
Whittingham will be able to gauge his team much better eight days from now.
