SANDY -- Sandy Elementary School students will rededicate a time capsule Monday morning after a car crash unearthed the 56-year-old memorial to veterans of World War II.
More than a year ago a car smashed into the flagpole at Sandy Elementary, located at 8725 S. 280 East. A World War II veteran's memorial is at the base of the pole. Principal Sandra Dahl-Houlihan says inside the memorial they found a pipe and long scroll dated 1953 with a list of names.
"It's some first and last names, but it's very traditional, Mr. and Mrs.," she said.
"This was the hub of the community, so they wanted to recognize war, the veterans, or the young people that had gone to Sandy Elementary and had served their country," Dahl-Houlihan said.
She told KSL at the time that they hoped to find out who made the time capsule.
"I just think it's a wonderful tribute. Whatever their intent was, it was their pride they had in their country and community, and they wanted to leave a lasting impression," she said.
Monday at 9 a.m. they will rededicate the memorial and rebury the 56-year-old time capsule with some modern items from the school, which celebrates its 100th birthday this year.
