SALT LAKE CITY -- More than 10,000 people worked their way through Salt Lake County Saturday for the Salt Lake City Marathon.
The massive group of runners took off from the starting line by Legacy Bridge at the University of Utah. From there, they wound their way through the county to the finish line 26 miles away at the Gateway.
Joseph Mutinda, 34, of New Mexico won with a time of 2:16:38. Moses Kororia, also of New Mexico, finished second at 2:21:36.
Mutinda said, "It's hard to pace yourself when those behind you are very good sometimes."
This year's marathon was nearly overshadowed by recent controversy over the finances of marathon owner Devine Racing. Past winners like Genna Tufa didn't get paid until just a couple of days ago. This time, however, winners got their checks just hours after they finished.
Fifth place winner Jeffery McClellan said, "I'm not sure what to think. I know people in the past have gotten it eventually after a year or 10 months, but we're going to go and cash it quick."
An estimated 13,000 runners and bikers participated. It was one of the largest turnouts for the marathon.
