SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Home foreclosures in Utah and the economic downturn are forcing people to give up their pets.
No More Homeless Pets in Utah says that between January and August, about 40 Utah animal shelters report taking in 4,000 more pets over the same period last year.
Holly Sizemore, the group's executive director, says the economic climate is forcing people to move, sometimes into apartments where they can't afford the pet deposit.
Sizemore says 32,000 animals were euthanized in Utah last year. She says this year that number could reach up to 39,000.
Animal advocates are conducting dog and cat food drives to help Utahns cope with the economy and keep their pets.
