ST. GEORGE — Sunshine all day is just a few hours away.

In October, the St. George landscape and residents are barely starting to acknowledge fall. While it’s not quite swimming weather any more, put on some shorts and head south for a weekend.

In addition to old St. George favorites like the outlet malls and spa days below are some suggestions that might add an element of novelty to your trip to Utah’s Dixie.

St. George Art Museum

View some of the most iconic images from America’s Great Depression, captured by Dorothea Lange for the Farm Security Administration. These works of art and photojournalism have become the faces of Americans during the adverse era.

Attendees can also view TIME magazine’s photographs of Gunlock, St. George & Toquerville, or “Three Mormon Towns” trom the St. George Art Museum’s permanent collection.

Snow Canyon

A visit to Snow Canyon at any time of the year is a good idea, but visiting in the company of a wildlife biologist looking for a gila monster is an even better idea.

Visitors can learn about the desert creature, then look for one themselves. Bring a picnic and make it a lunch outing. The Monsters In The Desert lecture begins at 10 a.m. and runs until 11:30 a.m. Register beforehand.

Historic District

If you have visited St. George, you have likely seen many of these places, but take an afternoon to learn about the historical significance and interesting stories of them.

The St. George Chamber has created a PDF walking tour map for those who want to connect the dots and understand the history of the city.

While you’re walking, be sure to check out the shops and restaurants owned by locals in the historic district.

Pickleball

Act like a true local and hit the Pickleball courts in St. George. The fast-paced game is a cross of whiffle ball and badminton and great for the old and young.

Watch a demonstration of the game on the USA Pickleball Association’s website, pick up some equipment and get outside.

Southwest Symphony

Each year, the musicians of the Southwest Symphony don their costumes and play spooky music for their audience. Focused on the community — the symphony invites young instrumentalists to play for the evening — this concert is sure to put a smile on your face and inspire your little musician.

Tuacahn

Catch a performance of the annual “Thriller” as Odyssey Dance Company travels to St. George for the event.

If your family prefers stories about cheery nannies who sing songs with the birds, “Mary Poppins” is playing through Oct. 25 at Tuacahn. The production is sure to leave you humming along and dreaming of childhood.
