Storm dumps more snow, closes Park City schools

Nicole Gonzales reporting Another winter storm is making its way through the Wasatch Front. Our local mountains, including Park City, were hit hard overnight, so much that Park City School District canceled school for the first time in nearly seven years.

As you can imagine, most students aren't one bit disappointed about missing school today.

"I'm really excited because it's perfect powder day and I get to go skiing," one student said.

Another student said, "I'm really excited to go skiing. I tried to get up here as early as I can."

Snow is piled over bathroom doors, basketball courts and play grounds. Even Park City, a resort town used to snow, had a hard time dealing with the last two storms.

"One of our employees has been here over 16 years and she remembers that we've only closed school four times in those 16 years. So, this is really an anomaly. We don't close schools. We're used to snow in Park City, I mean, that's what we're all about," Timothy said.

Students are just enjoying the snow day that they'll eventually have to make up. "They might think I'm a champion right now because they can be out in this and enjoying the day, but come spring I won't look so good in their eyes at that point," Timothy said.

Also the roads remain dangerous this afternoon. They're still wet and still icy.

Little Cottonwood Canyon is now open but restricted to vehicles with chains or four-wheel drive. I-80 through Parley's Canyon is open to all traffic, but semis need chains. Sardine Canyon was also restricted to vehicles with chains or four-wheel drive. Interstate-84 on the Utah side is also open.

Big Cottonwood Canyon and American Fork Canyons are still closed.

Snowplows have been out, but there's so much snow that many roads still have trouble spots. The Utah Department of Transportation says salt is vital to making those roads safe for your morning commute.
