PROVO — A group of residents living near the LDS Missionary Training Center are planning a type of protest this weekend to demonstrate just how tall a planned nine- story building MTC addition will be - they'll be using balloons.
Support for the planned 160 foot MTC building is divided in the Provo Pleasant View neighborhood. There are many in favor, but also many who say the building shouldn't be in their residential area, such as neighborhood chair Paul Evans.
"Putting that building in at that height represents a long- term major impact on the neighborhood," Evans said.
To demonstrate how tall the building will be, Evans said about 100 people will join together to put up orange balloons on 160 feet of string all around town. "The proposed building is the same height as the tallest downtown Provo buildings," Evans said in a press release.
"We believe that alternatives are available to the developer that would conform to the characteristics of the educational, business and residential neighborhoods of Provo."
Opponents like Evans have said that they would like the new building to be only as tall as current MTC buildings, or about 75 feet and five stories.
They'll also be starting a petition drive.
