TAYLORSVILLE -- Flash mobs have been around since about 2003, with just about everyone getting in on the act.
On Saturday, several hundred people gathered in Taylorsville to participate in a flash mob as part of the Taylorsville Dayzz Festival. The organized effort was a way to support Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" campaign.
Karmel Harper, a Zumba instructor, organized the event through Facebook and Twitter messages. She started teaching the moves to her class, but when others learned of the random act of dancing, hundreds signed up to participate.
"It all started in the gym," said Harper. "Because of social networking and Facebook, it has grown immensely. As of today, there were a thousand people who signed up to be a part of this."
The message is -- if you listen to the song and to the words and watch the dance, it's just to get out there and move.

Brigette Harris was one of the participants who found out through Facebook.
"It's on my bucket list -- being in a flash mob," Harris said. "It was a lot of fun."
Harper picked Beyonce's song "Move Your Body" for the dance. She said there was a message behind picking the song.
"The message is -- if you listen to the song and to the words and watch the dance, it's just to get out there and move," Harper said.
The dancing started at exactly 5:02 Saturday evening. Several children participated in the dance, which is exactly the point -- to get them moving.
