Sandra Yi and Paul Nelson ReportingA 17-year-old man was shot and killed in the parking lot of a popular park in Murray. Today police arrested the suspected gunman.
The shooting happened at Walden Park, which is located at 5420 S. Murray Parkway Blvd.
Police say 17-year-old Jesus Izarraras of West Valley City was sitting in his car when he was confronted by several people. They got into a heated argument about a mutual friend. That's when Murray Police Sgt. Tom Martin says 19-year-old Brian Bocephus Baker lost control. Martin said, "The suspect then pulled out a handgun and fired eight shots, striking the victim multiple times."
Izarraras was shot multiple times in the chest.
This was just before 9 o'clock last night, and several people were still in the park.
Martin said, "It's a tragedy that it happened here in our public park. None of these people involved have ties to that particular community or neighborhood and we're still looking into what brought them into that specific park. It may have been convenience off of a major highway."
Police say the gunman accidentally shot one of the other suspects in the foot when he tried to put the gun back in his waistband. Salt Lake Police found the man who had been shot in a neighborhood near Liberty Park. He was treated and released from the hospital.
Brian Bocephus Baker was booked into jail for murder.
Murray police took two others into custody for questioning and say they could also face charges in this case.
