SALT LAKE CITY — The House passed a bill Tuesday that would allow the sale of a new type of firework as well as change the time frame in which Utah residents can use fireworks.

The proposed "cake" fireworks would create colorful displays and possibly reach heights of more than 15 feet. They have been tested with the state fire marshal and would not present any unreasonable risk, said the bill's sponsor, Rep. James Dunnigan, R-Taylorsvile.

HB22 would delay the fireworks purchase date from June 19 to June 26. Residents would be allowed to use fireworks from June 26 — rather than the current date of July 1 — until July 26.

The current time frame is hard for people to remember and "very difficult to enforce," Dunnigan said.

Dunnigan said legalizing additional fireworks would bring more revenue to the state.

The bill now moves to the Senate for approval.
