SALT LAKE CITY — The American Heart Association Thursday recognized seven Utah companies as Start! Fit-Friendly for promoting physical activity and health in the workplace.

The association also released a policy statement that showed worksite wellness programs are proven to prevent the major modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease such as smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.

Local companies designated as Start! Fit-Friendly include 1-800-CONTACTS, Regence BlueCross BlueShield, Zions Bank, Questar Corp. and Questar Gas, UnitedHealth Group of Utah, the University of Utah and Usana Health Sciences.

Nationally, the association recognized more than 1,400 companies with more than 2 million employees participating.

Companies involved in the program encouraged physical activity, nutrition and culture enhancements such as on-site walking routes, healthful food choices in cafeterias and vending machines, annual employee health risk assessments and online tracking tools.
