SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah residents know the dangers of sun exposure and most say tanning doesn't make someone more attractive. But that doesn't mean they practice what they preach.
The American Academy of Dermatology ranked the Salt Lake City area as a relatively sun-smart city today. Salt Lake ranked seventh out of 32 cities.
When asked for the survey if people look healthier with a tan, 44 percent of Salt Lake City residents said "no."
But they may have sunbathed or used tanning beds as much as other respondents.
Utah has one of the highest rates for melanoma -- the most deadly form of skin cancer. About 60 Utahns die each year from melanoma and as many as 500 residents will be diagnosed with it this year.
Washington, DC, ranked as the most sun-smart city in the survey. Chicago ranked the worst.
