HIGHLAND — A 3-year-old girl is home after nearly drowning in the Highland Glen Pond.

Jared Singleton was fishing at the pond on Tuesday with his 3-year-old daughter Piper and 5-year-old son Gabriel. He said Piper and Gabriel went into the pond while he put away his fishing poles. When he returned, Gabriel had gotten out, but Piper was still in the water.

"I just ran as fast as I could out into the water, and I picked her up, and when I grabbed her she was sitting on the bottom looking up through the water at me," said Jared Singleton.

Piper's face had turned blue and her eyes had rolled to the back of her head. Singleton, who was once an EMT, began working on his daughter but needed help.

Jeremy Barlow, who is certified in CPR, was working across the street in construction for the city. He ran over to Piper and began doing compressions.

"I was just saying I can't be the one to watch her die," said Barlow.

Barlow said he gave 30 to 40 compressions before Piper started breathing.

Singleton said Piper was flown by helicopter to Primary Children's Hospital. She was released on Wednesday.

Lone Peak firefighters say this is the third near drowning in their district within the last two months.
