WELLSVILLE, Cache County — A 2-year-old boy is in surgery after being shot in the stomach, police said.
At about 6:40 p.m., police and medical crews responded to a call that indicated a child had been shot, said Lt. Mike Peterson, Cache County Sheriff's Office.
Peterson reported that the boy was shot in the stomach with a .22-caliber rifle. Initial evidence suggests the boy was shot by his 3-year-old sister, according to Cache County Sheriff Deputy Brad Slater.
The boy has been transported to Logan Regional Hospital in critical condition and is currently in surgery, Peterson said.
The child's parents and other family members were home at the time of the incident.
Peterson said the investigation will be conducted by the Cache County Sheriff's Office. Initial evidence suggests the shooting was accidental.
"This is still an active investigation with many questions to still be answered. More information will be released after we have had an opportunity to complete the initial phase of the investigation and we can confirm correct information," Peterson said.
