With the archery deer hunt kicking off next weekend, we thought it only appropriate to highlight Utah's most loved mammal, the mule deer.

If you have a permit for this year's archery hunt, expect plenty of bucks and lots of water.

Biologists with the DWR say the hunt should be a good one. Utah's herds have plenty of bucks. And the overall number of deer in the state is the highest it's been since the early 1990s.

Utah has received lots of rain this summer. The rain has provided deer with plenty of water to drink and vegetation to eat. However, the abundant water and feed have scattered deer across their mid and high elevation ranges. It's vital that you scout before the season starts so you can find the areas the deer are using.

For more information on this years hunt, check out the DWR's forecast at wildlife.utah.gov
