As the world turns its attention to the Beijing winter games, many Utahns might be feeling pangs of nostalgia as they reflect back on 2002 when Salt Lake played host. Though it's hard to believe that two decades have come and gone since then, the memories still burn bright for those who were lucky enough to witness them firsthand.

Maybe you went to an event in person or took part in trading those coveted collector pins. (Green Jell-O and fry sauce, anyone?) Maybe you volunteered at the opening and closing ceremonies and still have the winter coat to prove it. And there's probably a Roots 2002 Team USA beret collecting dust somewhere in your closet.

From an athletic, entertainment and economic standpoint, the 2002 games were a resounding success. The Utah Sports Commission notes that the state continues to benefit from the impact of the games to this day. With 10 fully-functioning venues ready to go, there's always a chance that the games could return to the Beehive State. (As of December 2021, the Deseret News reported that no official bids had been made, but 2030 and 2034 were still possible.)
