SALT LAKE CITY -- If you dishwasher's not washing, your heater's not heating, or your dryer sounds like a freight train, now may be the time to buy.

The federal government's offering $300 million in rebates when you buy new, energy-efficient appliances. That's one-tenth as much money as Cash for Clunkers, or about $1 per U.S resident, so it could run out fast.

States are receiving roughly the same amount per capita, with California getting the most at $35.2 million, but what's eligible varies by state.

Rebates have already started in 13 states -- the rest start this spring. In Utah, it should begin in March. It was so popular in Kansas, they've already run out of money.

If you're eyeing a rebate, here's the trick: every state's rules are different. In some areas, only low-income customers get rebates. In others, only certain appliances qualify. So read the fine print before you shop.

Some stores are offering extra incentives on top of the rebate, and some states are offering extra rebates if you recycle your old appliance.
