STUPID WHITE MEN By Michael Moore

Michael Moore’s Stupid White Men has been on the bestseller list for 53 weeks straight. Okay. I give. I actually bought the book some months ago intending to read it (you know how that is), and then after his stunt at the Academy Awards I felt repulsed. But I am nothing if not a student of my era, a news junky, an insatiably curious seeker of what makes people tick. So I risked the inevitable cognitive dissonance associated with exposing myself to the thoughts of someone I was sure to disagree with – strongly – in order to learn something.

If you have any of this kind of curiosity in you, I recommend first of all that you skip the first two chapters, or at least read them last. Moore blames absolutely everything from global warming to the stock market to mad cow disease on George W. Bush. It’s not until later in the book that you realize he also blames the democrats for selling themselves, their party, and consequently us out.

The book is outrageous. It includes a letter to President Bush asking him to admit he’s an alcoholic and a letter to Yassar Arafat telling him if he wants to win the peace to hold a nonviolent sit-in. Look – it’s not an easy read – but it may, just may, have something to teach us because, despite all the people he’s against, the one group Moore is clearly for is the working American. So – read at your own risk. On the bestseller list for over a year, Michael Moore’s book is Stupid White Men. On the Book Beat for KSL Newsradio 1160, I’m Amanda Dickson.
