NEW YORK, Jan 10, 2007 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Iconic jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald is to have her image immortalized in the 30th offering in the U.S. Postal Service's Postal Service's Black Heritage series.
Fitzgerald will be featured on the next first-class postage stamp from the Postal Service. The stamp's image, which was unveiled Wednesday at New York's Lincoln Center, was based on a 1956 portrait of the famed scat singer, the New York Daily News reported.
Music industry veterans said that while the stamp represents a tasteful memorial to the singer, she should have been honored more before she died in 1996.
"We should have worshiped her more in her lifetime," said XM Satellite Radio exec Jonathan Schwartz. "She was a fearless musician who thrilled the world with her irresistible music. She was simply a miracle."
Fitzgerald, who died at 79, spent six decades in the music industry, performing with noted musicians as Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and Duke Ellington.
