NEW YORK, Nov 24, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Actress Suzanne Somers is being criticized by the American Medical Association for her new book on drugs to treat aging in women.
The New York Daily News reported Somers called her new book "a bible."
"What we are doing now is the same as the Industrial Revolution," she said.
The book, "Ageless," reportedly touts bioidentical hormones, drugs that Somers claims are a solution to the discomforts of menopause and other changes women face as they age.
But the AMA is challenging many of the book's claims. Critics say ingredients of the drugs are not always known and their safety and benefits remain questionable. The Daily News reported that the plant-based, natural hormones were popular until 2002 when a government study found they increased risk of breast cancer and heart attacks.
But Somers told the Daily News many doctors are men and do not understand menopause. She also said the AMA seems to be working for the drug companies and not the patients.
