SALT LAKE CITY — Winter weather can make driving a challenge, but a little prep today before the snow arrives can help keep you safer on the road.
Jake Hansen and Rob Christensen from Tire Pros shared some simple ways to get your vehicle ready for winter driving.
Winter Safety Vehicle Checklist
1. Tires & Traction
- Check tire tread depth (minimum 4/32" recommended for winter).
- Switch to winter or all-weather tires if needed.
- Check tire pressure (cold air reduces PSI).
- Inspect spare tire condition and pressure.
- Carry tire chains (if required or recommended in your area).
2. Battery & Electrical System
- Test battery charge and replace if weak (cold weather reduces capacity).
- Clean battery terminals and ensure tight connections.
- Check alternator output and drive belts.
- Verify all lights (headlights, brake, tail, turn signals) are working.
3. Fluids
- Top off windshield washer fluid with winter formula (anti-freeze rated).
- Check coolant level and ensure correct antifreeze mixture (usually 50/50).
- Check oil level and consider winter-grade oil if recommended by manufacturer.
- Check brake fluid and power steering fluid levels.
- Ensure fuel tank stays at least half full (prevents freezing and provides emergency heat source).
4. Wipers & Visibility
- Replace worn wiper blades (winter blades recommended).
- Verify defroster and heater work properly.
- Clean interior and exterior windows thoroughly.
- Keep an ice scraper and snow brush in the vehicle.
5. Emergency Supplies
- Jumper cables or battery booster pack.
- Flashlight with extra batteries.
- Blanket(s) or sleeping bag.
- Extra warm clothing, gloves, hat.
- Non-perishable food and water.
- First aid kit.
- Small shovel and traction aid (sand, cat litter, or traction mats).
- Emergency flares or reflective triangles.
- Phone charger (car and battery pack).
6. Safety Systems
- Verify ABS and traction control lights are off and systems functional.
- Check brakes for even wear and proper stopping distance.
- Inspect exhaust system (no leaks, to prevent carbon monoxide).
7. General Maintenance
- Check belts and hoses for cracks or wear.
- Ensure door and trunk seals are not cracked (to prevent freezing shut).
- Lubricate locks and hinges.
8. Before Each Trip
- Clear all snow/ice from windows, mirrors, roof, and lights.
- Warm up the vehicle safely (no idling in enclosed spaces).
- Review weather and road conditions.
