Meet Frank and Morris, the two new spokes-vultures for Utah's Always Adventure Safe campaign. Developed by the Utah Office of Tourism, the new statewide initiative encourages locals to take a few simple steps before heading out on an adventure.

Morris is an earnest bird who genuinely wants people to stay safe outdoors. Frank, on the other hand, is a bit of a traditionalist who misses the days when hikers forgot water, wandered off trail, weren't prepared for conditions and generally made life easier for vultures.

"Being part of the Adventure Safe campaign is a dream come true," Morris said. "In my new role as a safety influencer, I help Utahns avoid preventable safety mistakes, outdoor emergencies and unexpected helicopter rides."

Frank was less enthusiastic.

"For the record, I have serious reservations about a campaign that teaches people to bring water and check conditions," Frank said. "Why do they need handholding? What happened to personal responsibility?"

The campaign's message

The campaign encourages people to pause and take a few simple steps before every adventure, like bringing enough water, checking conditions, dressing appropriately, knowing your limits and telling someone your plans.

Responsible practices like these can make a major difference in helping people enjoy Utah's outdoors safely and responsibly.

"I wanted to become part of the solution," Morris said, "instead of just part of the cleanup crew. I'm excited to be making a difference."

That message comes at a time when search and rescue incidents and avoidable injuries remain an unfortunate reality in Utah, despite the state's outdoor-focused culture.

Common issues include hikers underestimating heat or adventurers heading out without essentials like adequate water or a map. Those incidents put Utahns at risk and can also place added strain on local responders, state agencies and public resources.

"As a vulture, I am not opposed to some of these poor decisions," Frank said. "That said, if Utah's going to pay me, I can maybe change my mind."

The campaign will also include a giveaway running May 11-31, with five winners receiving an Adventure Safe Vacation. Some of the prizes include:

  • A paddleboarding and cottage overnight stay at Willard Bay State Park.
  • A Flaming Gorge rafting and lodging experience.
  • An Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata adventure.
  • Other overnight experiences across the state.

Adventurers can enter by visiting www.visitutah.com/adventure-safe-giveaway and completing a short form.

Getting involved

"Getting outside and experiencing adventure is part of who we are as Utahns," said Natalie Randall, Managing Director of the Utah Office of Tourism and Film. "This campaign is reinforcing best practices, even for experienced recreationists, in a way that stands out and encourages people to pause, plan ahead and take those small steps seriously."

So enjoy Utah, bring water, make a plan and do your best to stay safe and ruin Frank's day.
