MAGNA — One person is dead and another is in critical condition after a multi-vehicle crash early Sunday on Bacchus Highway near Magna, police said.

Officers responded just before 1 a.m. to reports of a collision near 5200 South on state Route 111, according to West Valley City Police Sgt. Jeff Smith. Witnesses initially reported that one or more vehicles may have rolled, but police later determined that none actually overturned.

Two people were trapped in one vehicle, Smith said. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was extricated and taken to a hospital in critical condition, he confirmed.

Occupants of the other two vehicles ran from the scene before officers arrived, Smith said. Investigators located and arrested the suspected at-fault driver several hours later.

"We believe impairment was a factor in this crash," Smith said. "It's very serious, and the traffic unit is still working to piece everything together."

A large section of Bacchus Highway remained closed Sunday morning between 5400 South and the Northrop Grumman entrance as police continued to investigate. Smith said the road could stay closed for several more hours, possibly into the afternoon.

Neither the name of the person killed nor the person arrested has been released.
