Layton resident Max B. was the perfect example of an active senior. His golden years were filled with running marathons, woodworking and household projects. That is, until a mini stroke in 2020 threw him a curveball that also led to debilitating spine issues.

Max experienced an unexpected transient ischemic attack (TIA), causing weakness and made him unsteady on his feet. Determined to keep an active lifestyle, Max continued to walk every day — but with this new instability, he was forced to constantly look down to keep his balance.

After some time, Max noticed that consistently walking with his head down was causing a hunched posture that impacted his ability to stand up straight. He couldn't even hold his head up like he used to. So, what's an active octogenarian to do?

Max's journey to overcoming back pain

Initially, Max assumed that his back and neck pain were caused by arthritis. He tried medication, creams, massage, and acupuncture, all to no avail. At most, Max would receive a few hours of relief from these fixes. He needed a long-term solution to regain his health and active lifestyle.

Max's son saw an advertisement for Uprightly Spine Care Center offering a solution to those suffering with back and neck pain. After one free consultation with Michael Halliday, a musculoskeletal physical therapist and research director at Uprightly Spine Care Center, Max felt renewed and excited about the path forward. He bought the program and got started with his treatment.

The coaches at Uprightly meet with Max on a regular basis to measure his spine for progress and educate him on the causes of his pain. Additionally, Uprightly coaches have provided tools to help Max take control of his own health and healing.

"My ability to sit up straight and hold my head up only took about a month to achieve," Max said. "My coach Michael taught me simple things that I do every day that help me think upright. I use a spine exercise machine that Uprightly created to gain strength, I do exercises that Michael taught me called 'squeeze-ups', and I keep stickers around the house that remind me to be upright."

Taking his health into his own hands with tools from the Uprightly Program has alleviated Max's pain and allowed him to return to his favorite activities.

Uprightly program offers concrete steps for pain relief

In fact, research published in the Asian Spine Journal reported almost half of initial lumbar surgeries fail and "no more than 30%, 15%, and 5% of the patients experience a successful outcome after the second, third, and fourth surgeries, respectively."

The article noted that multiple unsuccessful surgeries can lead to Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS). Uprightly aims to help those patients who have undergone surgery to have lasting success and to avoid additional surgeries and Failed Back Surgery Syndrome.

For those who are considering surgery, the Uprightly method appears to be a safe, low-risk option to try before going under the knife.
