20 new temples announced in final session of general conference

In the last session of general conference on Easter Sunday, President Russell M. Nelson announced 20 new temples to be built across the world, including one in Cache Valley.The new temples will be built in:

He told those listening to do everything they could to bring COVID-19 cases in their areas down so they could take even more advantage of temple service. Elder David A. Bednar — The Principles of My Gospel

Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles emphasized the "important roles of principles in the restored gospel of Jesus Christ," paraphrasing Joseph Smith's directive to teach correct principles and allow church members "to govern themselves.""Stated succinctly," Elder Bednar said, "a gospel principle is a doctrinally based guideline for the righteous exercise of moral agency."

— LDS Living (@LDSLivingMag) April 4, 2021Principles of the church include the Word of Wisdom, a health code that prohibits strong substances like alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs, but others are more implicit and nuanced than the common code of health among Latter-day Saints, he said.These principles include:The "principle of non-distraction," which Elder Bednar explained by citing President Dallin H. Oaks' counsel of being a directive to maintain "orderliness, cleanliness, reverence and dignity."The principle of the "Sabbath as a sign," rather than a "lists of dos and don'ts" involved with Latter-day Saints' reverence for the Sabbath day; and the principle of "being willing to let God prevail."The last one can help Latter-day Saints with "crucial decisions and life experiences" by being willing to "let God prevail," including in dating and marriage, getting answers to gospel questions and concerns, resisting temptation, making choices about personal grooming, deciding what to watch and read, where to spend time, with whom to associate, and others, Elder Bednar said."President Nelson's inspired questions emphasize a simple principle that provides direction in every aspect of our lives and enables us to govern ourselves," he said.Gospel principles are like a helm of a ship, Elder Bednar added, enabling Latter-day Saints to "find our way and to stand firm, steadfast and immovable" in life and in the world.

Elder Alan R. Walker — The Gospel Light of Truth and Love

Elder Alan R. Walker of the Seventy began his talk reciting verses from the Latter-day Saint hymn "Hark, All Ye Nations!" The verses sing of truth being restored again and the celebration of that in heaven. Elder Walker continued, talking about Joseph Smith's restoration of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He said that the restoration was a manifestation of God's love for his children.He went on to say that since the restoration the church has amassed millions of members spanning multiple continents. Elder Walker said the spread of the church has resulted in priesthood blessings becoming available across the world. He acknowledged what a blessing the growth was by reminiscing on when he was a child and had to travel to Salt Lake City for a temple sealing since there were not temples in South America at the time; Elder Walker was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Elder D. Todd Christofferson — Why the Covenant Path

Elder D. Todd Christofferson, of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, encouraged members to follow the covenant path in life, as faithful members believe it is the only way to achieve the celestial kingdom of God and that the path even extends beyond mortality.He counseled listeners of the importance of the path, as those who drift away often face heartbreak and regrets in life, while those who remain steadfast on the path and live the commandments and follow the gospel of Jesus Christ experience some of the greatest joys and happiness life has to offer.

Elder Timothy J. Dyches — Light Cleaveth Unto Light

In a discourse fitting for Easter Sunday as Christians around the world celebrate the biblical resurrection, Elder Timothy J. Dyches of the Seventy spoke of Jesus Christ as the "light of the world," a light that can guide men and women through the "darkness" of mortality.Light is vital to all life on earth, and so is the light of Christ vital to all men and women, Elder Dyches said."As we intensify our faith in Christ," he said, "we receive light in intensifying measure until it dispels all darkness that might gather around us."Additional light is given to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints through ordinances such as baptism and confirmation, Elder Dyches added, increasing light to guide God's children in mortal life.

Elder Ronald A. Rasband — Behold! I Am a God of Miracles

Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles began his talk discussing the miracle of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Elder Rasband then continued discussing the miracles Jesus Christ performed, such as the blind receiving their sight, the lame walking, the lepers being cleansed, the deaf hearing and the dead being raised up. He emphasized that miracles abound for those who are followers of Jesus Christ.

President Dallin H. Oaks — Defending Our Divinely Inspired Constitution

President Dallin H. Oaks, first counselor in the First Presidency, said he felt impressed to speak about the Constitution of the United States of America, clarifying he was not speaking for any political group. While his talk was directed toward Americans, he did say those across the world can find similarities in the document to the constitutions of other countries.President Oaks, who spent a career as a distinguished lawyer and justice, has studied the U.S. Constitution for more than 60 years and said it was a document divinely inspired by God. However, he noted that just because faithful Latter-day Saints believe the document is inspired, does not mean every word in the constitution was divine; later amendments were also divinely inspired.

He counseled members to uphold and defend the Constitution, and said they should feel optimistic about the nation's future.

Sunday Afternoon Session of general conference is about to begin

The final session of the 191st Annual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints begins at 2 p.m. MDT.Sunday's Easter morning session focused on the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the worldwide nature of the Church of Jesus Christ.Each speaker came from a different country; together they represented every populated continent on Earth, President Russell M. Nelson said, with some giving prerecorded talks in different parts of the world. The prerecorded music was also performed "by a variety of choirs from around the world singing in their native languages," according to the church.

President Russell M. Nelson — Christ is Risen; Faith in Him Will Move Mountains

Russell M. Nelson, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, began his talk addressing the global COVID-19 pandemic.President Nelson said he was impressed with how members have continued forward in faith in the face of loss, isolation and illness.President Nelson continued saying despite the pandemic, the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints continued and were needed. He pointed to the happiness the message can bring and how it is vital now and forever.He continued saying that everything good in life — including happiness — can be achieved through faith. President Nelson lamented that faith can seem overwhelming and can be difficult to muster but said that God understands mortal weakness. President Nelson said that God doesn't expect perfect faith, but belief.

Elder Michael John U. Teh — Our Personal Savior

Coming to know the Savior Jesus Christ is the most important pursuit in Latter-day Saints' lives, and it should take precedence over everything else, said Elder Michael John U. Teh of the Seventy.It's also a deeply personal and intimate journey for every individual Latter-day Saint, Elder Teh added.There's a difference between what you know about Christ and how you really know him, Elder Teh said. The more intimately one knows Christ, the better one is able to hear Christ and respond to him, Elder Teh said.

It has the power to cleanse, heal and strengthen people one by one, he added.Elder Teh described a time when his file leader asked him to read The Book of Mormon from cover to cover and then prepare a one-page summary of it.He finished the reading, but he failed to write the summary because he expected the summary to be inspiring to everyone, Elder Teh said. He failed to realize that the summary was meant to be meaningful only to him.

Elder Chi Hong (Sam) Wong — They Cannot Prevail, We Cannot Fall

Elder Chi Hong (Sam) Wong of the Seventy spoke about building a firm foundation in the gospel of Jesus Christ, akin to a song Latter-day Saint primary children's sing, "The Wise Man and the Foolish Man."Like the wise man in the song, members should build their foundations upon a rock and not on the sand, like the foolish man whose home quickly gets washed away in a flood as recorded in Matthew in the New Testament, Elder Wong encouraged.

Elder José A. Teixeira — Remember Your Way Back Home

It's important to remember your pathway back to the Heavenly Father and to faithfully persevere throughout the journey, said Elder José A. Teixeira of the Presidency of the Seventy. He shared four ways to remain strong in the journey.First, Latter-day Saints should remember that they have a divine heritage and are children of God. Remembering the blessings you have received from God helps you know who you truly are and recognize you're on the path back to your eternal home, Elder Teixeira said.

Elder Edward Dube — Pressing Toward the Mark

Elder Edward Dube of the Seventy, spoke about pressing forward with faith in this life, saying it isn't about what someone is going through in their lives, but more about what they are becoming.Just before he was called to be a general authority, Elder Dube recalled feeling out of place when attending his first general conference leadership meeting. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, approached Elder Dube and welcomed him to the meeting as he patted his face gently.

Sister Reyna I. Aburto — The Grave Has No Victory

Mourning those who have been lost is one of the deepest expressions of love, said Sister Reyna I. Aburto, second counselor in the Relief Society general presidency, invoking the words of President Russell M. Nelson.But we can't appreciate joyful reunions with loved ones later without tearful separations now, Sister Aburto added.Sister Aburto, who is from Nicaragua, spoke about losing her older brother in an earthquake when she was 9 years old.

She coped with his death by imagining that one day her brother would knock on her door and reunite with her.About 40 years after her brother's death, she said she received a message from the spirit that her brother's spirit is not gone, and he is proceeding in eternal life, Sister Aburto said.

Elder Ulisses Soares — Jesus Christ: The Caregiver of Our Soul

Elder Ulisses Soares, of the church's Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, opened Easter Sunday's first session by testifying about the atonement of Jesus Christ.Elder Soares encouraged members to repent of their sins and experience true forgiveness from God. When an individual sincerely repents, they can also feel the Holy Spirit on a deeper level, Elder Soares counseled.

Church President Russell M. President Dallin H. Oaks — What Has Our Savior Done for Us?

"What has Jesus Christ done for each of us?" asked President Dallin H. Oaks, second counselor in the church's First Presidency. There are many parts to answering this question, he said.Resurrection is the first part of the answer to the question of what Christ has done for us, President Oaks said. Members of the church believe in the literal resurrection of Jesus Christ and that a similar resurrection will happen to every mortal who has lived on Earth, he explained. The resurrection changes the way we look at mortal life too, he said.

Elder S. Gifford Nielsen — This is Our Time!

Elder S. Gifford Nielsen of the Seventy knew his audience well, opening his address to the church's all-male priesthood session with memories of his first game as a starting quarterback in the NFL. In that game he said he was playing the reigning Super Bowl champions and found himself on the bottom of a huddle of defensive linemen, staring up at over 1,000 pounds of the best athletes in the world."I wondered what I was doing there," he said, before adding, "Would I let my doubts overtake me, or find courage and strength to get up and to carry on?"Later he explained, "I needed to learn that I could be strong and courageous in the face of difficult situations."Likewise, the Lord needs men who are prepared to serve wherever they are and in whatever capacity — from the prophet and president of the church to the common man, Elder Nielsen said. The gathering of Israel is the most important thing taking place on earth today, said Brother Ahmad S. Corbitt, first counselor in the Young Men general presidency. The youth do this, and do it well, because one, there is something special about their identity; and two, they have an enormous power within them, he said.Gathering Israel involves helping people progress toward making covenants with God and receiving ordinances reserved for Latter-day Saint faithful, President Russell M. Nelson, president of the church, has taught.Everyone who has come to Earth lived with their Father in Heaven as spirit sons and daughters, Brother Corbitt said, and God longs for all of his children to live with him again in heaven. Youth should remember the Latter-day Saint belief that they overcame Satan before they were born and exercised faith by coming to Earth, he said.

Cook, of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, discussed the important role bishops play in wards, especially when it comes to the youth.Bishops can help members build faith in Jesus Christ and encourage individuals to remain in the church, Elder Cook said.As shepherds over the Lord's flock, Elder Cook said, it's crucial for bishops to minister to the youth and their families as they help guide young members through difficult and transitional times in their lives. This effort is one of the most important responsibilities of a bishop, Elder Cook noted.

Elder M. Russell Ballard, acting president of the church's Quorum of Twelve Apostles, directed his remarks toward single members of the church — a population that accounts for more than half of church membership, in those who are unmarried, divorced or widowed.Those individuals still belong to the church, just like everyone else in the faith that is regularly associated with families, he said.According to a report from the Mayo Clinic, having a sense of belonging — belonging to something or somewhere — is important, Elder Ballard said.Belonging to a community is vital to one's physical and mental health — as well as spiritual health, Elder Ballard added."Our spiritual identity is enhanced as we understand our many mortal identities, including ethnic, cultural or national heritage," he said.Elder Ballard's message of loneliness and belonging was punctuated by his own emotion, as he recalled the death of his wife and partner Barbara around two years ago. Elder Thierry K. Mutombo — Ye Shall Be Free

When Elder Thierry K. Mutombo, General Authority Seventy, visited church historical sites in Palmyra, New York, with his wife he said he felt God's presence there. While he and his wife were driving away, he had a big smile on his face. His wife asked him why, and he said, "My dear Nathalie, the truth will always triumph over error, and darkness will not continue on earth because of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ."People are still seeking for truth to become free of traditions and lies that the adversary spreads in the world, Elder Mutombo said, and many people are blinded by the "subtle craftiness of men," he said, quoting Latter-day Saint scripture. Jesus Christ promised that he will be the light for those that hear his words, Elder Mutombo said.Elder Mutombo then shared how his family found the light of Christ. His parents, his two sisters and his cousin lived in a small house, and kids were not permitted to be in the house when his dad got home from work. There was a lack of harmony and love, Elder Mutombo said.That changed when their family was taught the gospel by missionaries. After baptism, their family prayed often, went to church, and "the words of Christ began to enlarge our souls," Elder Mutombo said, and "we truly became a family."

Elder Neil L. Andersen — The Personal Journey of a Child of God

Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve acknowledged that everyone has been affected by the worldwide pandemic, as family and friends have passed away. While we weep for those who have died, we also can rejoice in the resurrection of the Savior Jesus Christ, which makes it possible for those who passed away to continue their eternal journey, he said.Elder Andersen taught that each person born on Earth is a unique son or daughter of God on a personal journey that did not begin at birth and does not end with mortal death.

Elder Dale G. Elder Jorge T. Becerra — Poor Little Ones

When Elder Jorge T. Becerra, General Authority Seventy, was young, he watched his dad find people who were in need and privately give them help by enrolling them in school, buying them food or doing something else they needed. Elder Becerra's dad would always say "pobrecito" which means "poor little ones." His family often housed those who needed a place to stay as they became self-reliant, Elder Becerra said. He watched his family live the principle of helping others temporally and spiritually and has tried to do that while serving in church now.Members of the church can help others through consistent and intentional ministering, Elder Becerra said, and people should use prayer for inspiration.

"He said much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary. And those members of the body which we think to be less honorable, upon these we bestow more abundant honor."

New Presidency of the Seventy and Primary general presidency called

The church called 11 new leaders during the Saturday afternoon session of general conference, in addition to the 77 new Area Seventies called during the leadership meeting earlier this week.President Dallin H. Oaks of the church's First Presidency presented the names of new General Authority Seventies, as well as a new Primary general presidency.President Camille N. Johnson, 57, who recently returned from missionary service with her husband in the Peru Arequipa Mission, was sustained as the newest president of the church's youth organization for children ages 18 months to 11 years. A native of Pocatello, Idaho, President Johnson has graduated with a law degree from the University of Utah and previously worked for the law firm of Snow, Christensen and Martineau in Salt Lake City.Sister Susan Holland Porter, first counselor in the Primary general presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 65, has served on the Relief Society advisory council since 2017. A native of Oklahoma who was raised in New York, she graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in chemistry, and worked as a lab assistant and part-time math teacher. She also served with her husband — Elder Bruce D. President Henry B. Eyring, second counselor in the First Presidency, began his talk by recalling the first time he went to the Salt Lake Temple as a young man."I have been in this lighted place before," he remembered thinking. The words then came to his mind, "No, you have never been here before. You are remembering a moment before you were born. You were in a sacred place like this."President Eyring shared his belief Saturday that temples are holy places of revelation to those who enter worthily.Latter-day Saints believe the temple is sacred because it is God's house. Members participate in ordinances and make covenants with God inside the temple — both for themselves and as proxies for their ancestors who have died.

Elder Gerrit W. Gong — Room in the Inn

Elder Gerrit W. Gong of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles taught that Jesus Christ invites all to become like him, a good Samaritan, and to make his inn a refuge for all.Elder Gong said as people come to the metaphorical inn — which he likens to the church — they learn five things about Jesus Christ and themselves:

People come to his inn as they are, with imperfections. Yet, all have something needed to contribute and the journey to God is often found together. Elder Gong stressed that all belong as a united community.

Elder Gong said Christ has entrusted members to make the church a place full of grace and space where each can gather. He said as disciples of Jesus Christ, all are equal, with no second-class groups.

In his inn, Elder Gong said, people learn that perfection is in Jesus Christ, not in the perfectionism of the world.

At his inn, Elder Gong said, people become part of a gospel community centered in Jesus Christ, anchored in restored truth, living prophets and apostles, and the Book of Mormon.

The final truth Elder Gong taught is that those at the inn rejoice that God loves his children from all different backgrounds and in all circumstances. Elder Gong said there is room for all.

Elder Gary E. Stevenson — Hearts Knit Together

A group of researchers in the 1970s conducted an experiment on a group of rabbits to test the effects of diet on heart health and discovered something unexpected, Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, said. Most of the rabbits eating a high-fat diet showed a buildup of fatty deposits on their arteries, but one group had as much as 60% less fatty deposits.The researchers couldn't figure out why these rabbits were healthier despite an unhealthy diet and finally figured out that one researcher who fed that particular group of rabbits was "an unusually kind and caring individual." She talked to, cuddled and petted the rabbits when she fed them. When the researchers repeated the experiment and had the same researcher give the rabbits cuddles and love while she fed them, the results were the same.Rabbits under the care of the loving researcher had significantly higher health outcomes.Kindness is a fundamental, healing gospel principle that can heal hearts emotionally, spiritually, and like the rabbits, even physically, Elder Stevenson said.When asked by his disciples what is the "great commandment," Jesus told them to love the Lord with all their heart and to "love thy neighbor as thyself," Elder Stevenson said. It is a heavenly commandment to not contend with each other and to have our "hearts knit together" in unity and love, he said.Elder Stevenson outlined how we can practice kindness every day:

Children can be kind by standing up to bullying and teens can help stop cyberbullying.

Adults can set a good example by being good role models of kindness, inclusion and civility, he said.

Brother Jan E. Newman — Teaching in the Savior's Way

Brother Jan E. Newman, second counselor in the Sunday School general presidency, talked about the importance of teaching as the Savior Jesus Christ taught.He cited two examples of teachers from his life, thanked them, and said everyone deserves to have a life-changing learning experience from teachers both at home and at church.

Brother Newman gave three suggestions for accomplishing this:

Learn all you can about the Savior Jesus Christ. The church provides many resources, including "Teaching in the Savior's Way," he pointed out.

Unleash the power of families. Brother Newman related an experience of how studying "Come Follow Me" as a family, over Zoom, during the pandemic can change hearts.

Remember that conversion is personal. Others can teach and tell about the word of God, but each person can to feel the impact of it themselves through the spirit.

Brother Newman said everyone who teaches in the home and at church can offer others the opportunity to have their own spiritual experiences.He ended by encouraging church leaders to improve teaching.

President Joy D. Jones — Essential Conversations

President Joy D. Jones, general president of the Primary, taught it's our "privilege and our responsibility" to help children progress in the gospel of Jesus Christ. She said parents cannot wait for conversion to simply happen to their children, stating that "accidental conversion" is not a principle of the gospel.

It doesn't have to be complicated, she said, teaching that simple conversations can help children know what their parents believe, but most importantly, why they believe.She likened the home to a spiritual training ground of sorts for the battlefield of life. She used the story of a soldier going through grueling training to go off to the Vietnam War — training that eventually saved the life of the soldier.President Jones said as children learn, their beliefs will be challenged. Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf — God Among Us

Before he was 12 years old, his family had to flee their home twice and start over amid fear and chaos because of wars and political division, Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the church's Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said at the beginning of his talk. It was difficult and lonely, Elder Uchtdorf said, and it must have been terrifying for his parents. In his loneliest hours, he wondered "Is there any hope left in the world?"Elder Uchtdorf said he has found that God has always been among us, even in times of uncertainty. He outlined three ways he's found God's message of hope:

Angels among us: Missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ have always brought a hopeful message of the gospel of Jesus Christ. It helped Elder Uchtdorf during World War II and he feels their hopeful message now.

Salvation among us: Because of Jesus Christ, people can always repent of their sins, Elder Uchtdorf said.

Jesus among us: God has not abandoned his children, and as people serve their fellow brothers and sisters, they are bringing the spirit of Jesus Christ through their service.

President Russell M. Nelson — Welcome Message

President Russell M. Nelson, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, welcomed listeners to general conference and noted that during the past year, people have learned new things.One of the things he said was reaffirmed to him in a new way is that the Lord directs the affairs of the church and has intervened in very challenging circumstances when the church's First Presidency had done all they could.President Nelson also said he understands better the hastening of the Lord's work, even in a pandemic. He thanked church members for the increased study of the gospel in their homes.
