President Russell M. Nelson — A New Normal

President Russell M. Nelson closed the conference by trying to leave listeners with a sense of hope moving forward. The church president said he had pondered and prayed about what to say to give the members "the optimism about the future that I know the Lord wants you to feel.""Let us not spin our wheels in the memories of yesterday," he said. "The gathering of Israel moves forward. The Lord Jesus Christ directs the affairs of His church, and it will achieve its divine objectives."President Nelson said it is common these days to hear the phrase "new normal," and encouraged listeners to embrace one as well.

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland — Waiting on the Lord

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles drew direct comparisons to previous tough times and the one in which humanity finds itself in the throes of the novel coronavirus pandemic.How long do we wait for hardships to pass, like the COVID-19 pandemic, which has caused physical, emotional and financial difficulties for so many?There will be times in our lives when even our best spiritual efforts do not yield victories — both in global matters and personal problems.“But I offer you my apostolic promise: that they are heard and they are answered, though perhaps not in the time and in the way we wanted,” Elder Holland said. “But they are always answered at the time and in the way an omniscient and eternally compassionate parent should answer them.”

Asking for a painless, stress-free life devoid of trials is not part of the plan. “My beloved brothers and sisters, Christianity is comforting but often not comfortable,” Elder Holland said. “The path to holiness and happiness here and hereafter is a long and sometimes rocky one. It takes time and tenacity to walk it. But, of course, the reward for doing so is monumental.” That includes enduring during a global pandemic. Eventually, relief will come, he promised.

Elder Kelly R. Johnson — Enduring Power

Elder Kelly R. Johnson of the Quorum of the Seventy spoke about the power of God. Elder Johnson shared a story about how his daughter once accidentally set their microwave oven on fire after leaving it on for 20 minutes, mistaking it for a timer instead.

Unlike the microwave, which caught fire after nothing was inside it to absorb the energy, Elder Johnson said those with faith and the word of God deep in their hearts will be able to overcome trials.

Elder Dale G. Renlund — Do Justly, Love Mercy, and Walk Humbly with God

Elder Dale G. Renlund of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said that members of the church should look to be just and humble as they look to become more Christlike.“Loving mercy means that we do not just love the mercy God extends to us; we delight that God extends the same mercy to others,” he said.

“Without the blessings that come from Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, we can never do enough or be enough by ourselves. The good news, though, is that because of and through Jesus Christ we can become enough.” #ElderRenlund | #GeneralConference

That led to a lesson from another doctor: “You became a physician to care for people and work to heal them. You didn’t become a physician to judge them.” Elder Renlund said members should treat others the same way — work to help them, to care for them, and not judge them.

Brother Milton Camargo — Ask, Seek and Knock

Revelation is essential to spiritual survival “because the world can be confusing and noisy, full of deception and distractions,” said Brother Milton da Rocha Camargo of the church’s Sunday School presidency.Receiving that revelation requires three steps: asking, seeking and knocking, he added.

Ask: “Asking seems simple, and yet it is powerful because it reveals our desires and our faith.”

Seek: “When we seek, we are humbly acknowledging that we still have much to learn, and the Lord will expand our understanding, preparing us to receive more.”

Knock: “To knock is to act in faith. When we actively follow Him, the Lord opens the way before us.”

Elder Gary E. Stevenson — Highly Favored of the Lord

Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the church’s Quorum of the Twelve Apostles described the heartbreak, disappointment and sorrow the events of 2020 have brought for many families — from canceled events to deaths of loved ones.As the world has endured many challenges in recent months, Elder Stevenson explained to members of the church how they have been “highly favored of the Lord.”

Elder Jeremy R. Jaggi — Let Patience Have Her Perfect Work

Elder Jeremy R. Jaggi of the Seventy taught that having patience is the key to having trials work to our good.Elder Jaggi said that following the passing of his brother, he and his family determined that 2020 would be a “refreshing year.” His family even got shirts that said in bold letters “Count It All Joy.”He didn’t have to go into too much detail about how 2020 has been far from the perfect year.“Our Heavenly Father may be allowing us time to reflect and consider our understanding of patience and our conscious decision to choose joy,” Elder Jaggi said.

President Henry B. Eyring — Tested, Proved and Polished

President Henry B. Eyring of the church’s First Presidency offered advice and counsel to those who experience challenging and uncertain times, because if that time is not now, it eventually will be.“That is not a gloomy view,” President Eyring said. “It is realistic — yet optimistic — because of God’s purpose in the creation of this world.”Added President Eyring’s mom, when her son was complaining about his sore hands while pulling weeds in the garden of his youth: “Oh Hal; of course it’s hard. It’s supposed to be. Life is a test.”Pain and difficulty are part of God’s plan, President Eyring said, and members of the church believe they accepted that plan before being born. That’s also why the plan, which Latter-day Saints refer to as the “plan of happiness,” included a Savior in Jesus Christ.

President Russell M. Nelson — Let God Prevail

As President Russell M. Nelson has studied the scriptures during 36 years as an apostle and learned from two Hebrew scholars about the “gathering of Israel,” he recently came to learn a new meaning of the word “Israel” that changed his view of the doctrine: “Let God prevail.”“That concept stirs my soul,” President Nelson said.“With the Hebraic definition of Israel in mind, the gathering of Israel takes on added meaning,” he added. “The Lord is gathering those who are willing to let God prevail in their lives. The Lord is gathering those who will choose to let God be the most important influence in their lives.”Latter-day Saints have been charged to help God in the pivotal work of gathering Israel, which includes missionary and temple work of the church, President Nelson said. All members are called to that work, he said, in some form.The gathering extends to all people, races and ethnicities. Speaking clearly and frankly about issues of race and racial relations, President Nelson said: “God does not love one race more than another.”“I assure you that your standing before God is not determined by the color of your skin,” President Nelson said. “Favor or disfavor with God is dependent upon your devotion to God and His commandments, and not the color of your skin.“I grieve that our Black brothers and sisters the world over are enduring the pains of racism and prejudice. Elder Carlos A. Godoy: I Believe in Angels

“I believe in angels, and I would like to share with you my experiences with them,” Elder Carlos A. Godoy of the Presidency of the Seventy said at the beginning of his talk.Elder Godoy quoted Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, who said at a previous general conference that angels “who are instruments in the hand of God” are not always “on the other side of the veil” and that some of them are our neighbors and friends.

Elder Ulisses Soares — Seek Christ in Every Thought

Elder Ulisses Soares of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles spoke of seeking Jesus Christ “in every thought,” and how those thoughts guide the actions of believers — both for good and for bad.Seeking for good thoughts, as well as opposing bad ones, is a lifelong goal, he said.“Fighting against temptation takes a lifetime of diligence and faithfulness. But please know that the Lord is ready to assist use in our personal efforts and promises remarkable blessings if we endure to the end.”

Even for those who “fall into temptation and are dwelling upon unrighteous actions,” Elder Soares assured that “there is a way back.” That way back involves a hope in Christ. Leaving the path can begin with a single improper thought or action, which can lead to acting on more “unworthy desires,” he added. Similarly, returning to the path can begin with a single good thought, action or desire. “My dear friends, when we resist the little temptations, which often come in unexpectedly in our lives, we are better equipped to avoid serious transgressions,” Elder Soares said.

Sister Lisa L. Harkness — Peace, Be Still

In trying times, it can be difficult to maintain faith, Sister Lisa L. Harkness, first counselor in the Primary general presidency, said in her talk.These current hard times many are facing this year are no exception, she said, adding that it can be tempting to urgently seek help from God, just as the first president of the church, Joseph Smith, once did when imprisoned, saying “Oh God, where art thou?”However, it is crucial to remember God’s all-knowing power and trust in his divine timing, Sister Harkness said.

Russell Ballard, acting president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.The Lord knows you and is aware of your pain and anguish and he loves you, President Ballard said.President Ballard asked people from every country around the world to exercise their faith and pray for their country and national leaders, and to pray for peace and healing. President Ballard asked listeners to pray always, for their families, leaders of nations, people on the front lines of “social, environmental, political and biological plagues” throughout the world. Jesus also taught us how to pray for our enemies, President Ballard said: “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” Kneeling in prayer for justice, peace, the poor, the sick is not enough — after you pray, you need to do what you can to help, he said. Combine prayer with action to make a difference. Prayer can change our lives, and through sincere prayer, we can improve and help others to do the same, President Ballard said.

President Russell M. Nelson — Embrace the Future with Faith

The estimated 8 million female members of the church have been on the mind of church President Russell M. Nelson, as he’s considered the “grandeur” of 2020 and the current season of his life — though, “grandeur may not be the word you would choose to describe the past few months,” he added during his closing remarks of the general women’s session.With that in mind, President Nelson offered several keys to being prepared for what 2020 — and beyond — will likely bring to members of the church.“If preparation is our key to embracing this dispensation and our future with faith, how can we best prepare?” he asked, rhetorically. “I urge you to take steps to be temporally prepared. But I am even more concerned about your spiritual and emotional preparation.”He then offered three preparations for women of the church, for themselves, their families, children and those around them:

Create places of security. “As turmoil rages around us, we need to create places where we are safe, both physically and spiritually. When your home becomes a personal sanctuary of faith — where the spirit resides — your home becomes the first line of defense.”

Prepare your mind to be faithful to God. “Just as the physical foundation of the Salt Lake Temple must be strong enough to withstand natural disasters, our spiritual foundations must be solid. Then, when metaphorical earthquakes rock our lives, we can stand ‘steadfast and immovable’ because of our faith.”

Never stop preparing. “The adversary never stops attacking. So, we can never stop preparing. The more self-reliant we are — temporally, emotionally and spiritually — the more prepared we are to thwart Satan’s relentless assaults.”

Few things build faith more than frequent readership and study of the Book of Mormon, President Nelson added.“I’m not saying that the days ahead will be easy, but I promise you that the future will be glorious for those who are prepared, and who continue to prepare to be instruments in the Lord’s hands,” he said.“Let us not endure this current season. Let us embrace the future with faith. Turbulent times are opportunities for us to thrive spiritually.”

President Henry B. Eyring — Sisters in Zion

Women, young women and girls will be an essential force in the gathering of Israel and in the creation of a Zion people, said President Henry B. Eyring, second counselor in the First Presidency. The women of this gospel dispensation will be led by the Lord to become prepared like the City of Enoch in the Bible. The people of Zion are of one heart and one mind and God’s daughters have a gift to diminish contention and promote righteousness, President Eyring said.President Eyring said he has seen the influence of faithful women in the church to love, lift, and care for each other.

Unlike the wood of a piano, whose broken or dented wood can make retuning its sound virtually impossible, men and women can be fully renewed through faith in and the power of Jesus Christ, said Sister Cristina B. Franco of the Primary general presidency.Recalling her family’s experience with a brand new player piano that was dropped, cracked and broken when movers were seeking to install it in her home, Sister Franco asked rhetorically, “aren’t we all like this piano — a little broken, cracked and damaged?”

Sister Becky Craven — Keep the Change

Sister Becky Craven, second counselor in the Young Women general presidency, asked listeners to imagine paying a cashier more than something is worth.The cashier will give back change. She then pointed out that the Savior Jesus Christ gives people much, much more through the gift of His Atonement than the value of what they can ever return to Him.

Sister Sharon Eubank, first counselor in the Relief Society General Presidency, shared a story about how a young boy at first said he didn’t want to share any of his pie that his mother had made for him with his sister or his friend. He later had a change of heart and shared two big pieces with the girls, which touched his sister's heart.At a Relief Society meeting in June 1842, Joseph Smith talked about mercy and said members of the church should “overlook small things.” Joseph Smith then said “by union of feeling we obtain power with God.

Have mercy: Don’t judge each other or say anything that is unkind. Give the gift of mercy to others. Make your boat swing: In rowing, there is something that happens when all members of a team are completely in sync and it is called “swing.” All rowers are in perfect unison: Those with shorter arms have to reach a little further and those with longer arms have to hold back a little. These differences can be turned to advantage instead of disadvantage, Sister Eubank said. The same can be done in Relief Society and Young Women’s classes. Clear away the bad as fast as the good can grow: Unity does not automatically happen. You have to work at it, she said. Clear away the bad tendencies and judgments and habits and the good will begin to grow in its place.

Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf — God Will Do Something Unimaginable

Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said God uses adversity to bring about His purposes, and used an account of early Latter-day Saints who faced adversity while building the Salt Lake Temple as an illustration of this.The temple’s foundation was nearly complete when an army of U.S. soldiers approached. Then-church President Brigham Young had the Latter-day Saints bury the temple’s foundation.Later it was discovered that many of the sandstones in the foundation had cracked. Elder Uchtdorf pointed out that they were replaced with stronger pieces of granite that ultimately provided a solid foundation for the temple for years to come. This is similar to the circumstances people face today, he said.While there is much we do not know about the current pandemic, “this virus did not catch Heavenly Father by surprise,” he said.

Elder Matthew Scott Holland — The Exquisite Gift of the Son

Alma, a prophet in the Latter-day Saint scripture the Book of Mormon, told his sons about how he repented of his sins and turned his life to Christ. When talking about the guilt he felt from his sins, Alma said there was “nothing so exquisite and so bitter.”Elder Matthew Scott Holland, General Authority Seventy, said the word “exquisite” can convey extreme intensity, for either beauty and magnificence or pain. Guilt from sin must be felt, Elder Holland said, because justice demands it and “God himself cannot change it.”Alma goes on in his account to say the exquisite and bitter pain from his sins went away when he remembered Jesus Christ and began to pray for Christ to have mercy on him. His pain was then turned into “exquisite” joy “as exceeding as was (his) pain.”

Bishop W. Christopher Waddel — There was Bread

Bishop W. Christopher Waddell, who was called as first counselor in the Presiding Bishopric earlier in the session, said from the beginning of time, the Lord has given direction to help people prepare both spiritually and temporally for difficulties that are part of life.People would be wise to listen and act on that guidance, he said.He used the Biblical example of Joseph in Egypt, who interpreted Pharoah’s dream about an upcoming famine. Just as Pharoah listened and prepared, Bishop Waddell urged listeners to heed God’s counsel and act.

Elder Gerrit W. Gong participated in conference remotely after a possible exposure to COVID-19, and spoke to members in a pre-recorded conference talk.Elder Gong stressed that God loves people of all nations and cultures, and seeks to gather people together in His house. Church members may participate in fulfilling prophecy and sharing the gospel, he noted. Brother Steven J. Lund — Finding Joy in Christ

Brother Steven J. Lund, the Young Men General President, told the story of his son Tanner, who contracted cancer at age 9. By age 12, the cancer had metastasized to his bones, and even with pain medication, it hurt for him to move.One Sunday morning, shortly before he died, Tanner’s mom discovered he was ready and dressed for church. She asked him if he felt strong enough to go to church, and Tanner, who was a deacon in his congregation, said he wanted to go pass the sacrament because he thought it helped others to see him serve, even when he felt weak. They went to church that morning and Tanner passed the sacrament trays to members of the congregation.

Children and teens can use the new Children and Youth program to help them find Christ and, Lund said, by finding Christ, they will find peace and joy. Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles spoke about the fundamentals that will help society flourish and lead to happiness, progress, peace and wellbeing.He cited two societies from scriptures as examples — that of the ancient prophet Enoch, and that of the Nephites and Lamanites in the Book of Mormon. He pointed out that members of those societies showed exemplary devotion to the two great commandments — to love God and love their neighbor.However, sustainability is not guaranteed, Elder Christofferson said. He noted that once-flourishing societies can fail if they abandon the cardinal virtues that uphold peace and prosperity, as did the Nephites and Lamanites.

New counselor in the Presiding Bishopric announced

Bishop Dean M. Davies, first counselor in the Presiding Bishopric, was released from his position and called as a General Authority Seventy.Bishop Davies will be replaced by Bishop W. Christopher Waddell, who will be the new first counselor in the Presiding Bishopric. He formerly served as second counselor.Elder L. Todd Budge will be the new second counselor.Those in the Presiding Bishopric are "responsible for many of the Church’s temporal affairs," according to the church's newsroom. "The Presiding Bishopric consists of the Presiding Bishop and his two counselors. Each holds the office of bishop, and they serve under the direct supervision of the First Presidency."L. Whitney Clayton, Enrique R. Falabella and Richard J. President Dallin H. Oaks — Love Your Enemies

While general conference is for all members and nonmembers worldwide, President Dallin H. Oaks, first counselor in the First Presidency, spoke directly to those in the United States, although he noted the principles in his message apply globally.With reference to recent protests and rising tensions in the country in regard to racism and police brutality, President Oaks shared the following message: “As citizens and as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we must do better to help root out racism.”

He reminded those listening that following man’s law is important, and that there is the right to protest under the U.S. Constitution which protects peaceful protests. President Oaks also addressed the upcoming election and a deep political division in the country, saying the church will peacefully accept the results of the election; it will not condone or participate in any violence threatened by those disappointed with the outcome. The first counselor also advised people to truly love their neighbors — and their enemies — as taught by Jesus Christ. President Oaks shared the following counsel from the late President Thomas S. Monson who said anger is Satan’s tool to divide. Members and nonmembers alike should instead rise above anger and seek to learn from and love their enemies, President Oaks said. Lastly, President Oaks said people can find unity in diversity. Over the many years he has lived across the United States, he said the Lord has taught him it is possible to seek to improve the country’s laws and love one’s enemies in the process. President Oaks noted that while this process isn’t easy, it is possible with help from Jesus Christ.

Elder Quentin L. Cook — Hearts Knit in Righteousness and Unity

Elder Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles encouraged listeners to seek righteousness and unity, and become communities without envy and contention. He also noted that while modern times see strong divisions, individuals should commit themselves to personally be united and righteous by showing civility, racial harmony and inclusion. Elder Cook reminded listeners that all are alike unto God, and that inequalities are not Christlike. He shared a story of observations made in the late 1800s by a couple who weren't members of the faith, who observed career women among the church members in Utah, and saw members treating Native Americans kindly.Although not all relationships at the time were positive, and not all behaved well, he said early church members were told by God that slavery was wrong, and its doctrine respected Native Americans in contrast to prevailing beliefs of the era. Church culture comes from the gospel, Elder Cook said, encouraging members to celebrate diversity while setting aside conflict in an effort to seek oneness and the culture of Christ.

Sharing a message of seeing others as God sees them, Sister Michelle D. Craig, first counselor in the Young Women General Presidency, counseled members to pray for the Lord to open their eyes to see things they might not normally notice.While seeing others through God’s eyes is important, Sister Craig noted it’s also crucial to see ourselves as God sees us.This first step will help and prepare each to see their fellow brothers and sisters in a divine way, she said.In one such instance, Sister Craig shared an impression she once had — to avoid scrolling her phone while waiting in line.
