SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Bryce Canyon National Park in southern Utah became the latest park to close its gates to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Park superintendent Linda Mazzu said Monday night that the ongoing flow of visitors to a park noted for its spire-shaped red rock formations known as hoodoos made it difficult to maintain proper social distancing. She says she made the decision with the backing of Interior Secretary David Bernhardt and Garfield County commissioners. Capitol Reef National Park remains the last of Utah’s five national parks still open, but its scenic drive and campgrounds are closed. Zion, Arches and Canyonlands national parks are already closed.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The company that makes Nerds candy says a version of the product infused with the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana that was eaten by Utah children after being donated to a food bank was counterfeit. Company officials said Tuesday they are cooperating with police investigating how the candy ended up in bags picked up by dozens of families north of Salt Lake City Friday amid widespread economic hardship during the coronavirus crisis. Authorities say two children were hospitalized after eating the candy but were later released and are expected to make a full recovery. The Utah Food Bank has said it is changing its processes to keep anything similar from happening again.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah man who briefly took a hostage at an FBI office eight years ago is facing new charges after prosecutors say he rammed his car into the main security gate of the agency’s building to drawn agents’ attention. Robert Joseph Hibbard of Midvale was charged with one of destruction of government property in a complaint filed Monday. Authorities say he crashed his minivan into a metal gate Sunday afternoon after unsuccessfully trying to reach an agent. No attorney was listed for him Tuesday. Hibbard briefly forced a man to take him to a downtown FBI office at knifepoint in 2012.

FARMINGTON, Utah (AP) — A judge has sentenced a long-haul truck driver to life in prison after he pleaded guilty to 17 first-degree felonies, including sexually assaulting at least eight women in Davis County in Utah. Mark Douglas Burns of Ogden pleaded guilty in February to aggravated sexual assault, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated burglary and aggravated robbery. Prosecutors say the charges involved sexual assaults of three women in 2000 and 2001. Developments in DNA analysis and technology led investigators to Burns. Prosecutors say there were other cases where charges couldn’t be brought because the legal deadlines had passed, including suspected cases in Wyoming.
