PROSECUTORS LAY OUT CASE AGAINST WEINSTEIN IN OPENING STATEMENTS

NEW YORK (AP) — Harvey Weinstein was “not just a titan in Hollywood — he was a rapist.” That is what a prosecutor has told jurors in opening statements at Weinstein’s rape and assault trial in New York. Meghan Hast told the panel of seven men and five women Weinstein had a pattern of abusing women in the movie industry. She said he screamed at one victim that she “owed” him sex and pushed his way into the apartment of another woman to assault her. Hast told jurors Weinstein needs to be held accountable because of what she calls his “complete lack of empathy.” The defense is countering by telling jurors Weinstein’s sexual dealings were all consensual — and that it has evidence showing women who accuse him of assault later sent friendly emails.

HARVEY WEINSTEIN SAYS HE’S FEELING BETTER

NEW YORK (AP) — When Harvey Weinstein entered a New York City courtroom for the start of his rape trial, he was minus one of his recent “co-stars:” the walker he’d been using to get around during recent pre-trial hearings. Asked how he was doing, Weinstein said he is feeling better. The disgraced Hollywood titan had told the court he needed back surgery — and that he would be healed up in time for the trial to go forward as scheduled.

R. KELLY - SEXUAL ABUSE

CHICAGO (AP) — As Harvey Weinstein’s rape trial gets underway in New York, prosecutors in Chicago are laying out plans to put R. Kelly on trial. Illinois officials say the first of four sex abuse cases against the singer will center on a 2003 complaint. In that one, a hairdresser says Kelly tried to force himself on her during an appointment. Kelly faces a host of charges in several jurisdictions, including Illinois and New York. In three of the four Illinois state cases, prosecutors say the women were underage when they suffered abuse by Kelly. The singer remains in jail as he awaits trial.

CUBA GOODING JR. - TRIAL

NEW YORK (AP) — Prosecutors in New York say when Cuba Gooding Jr. goes on trial on charges of sexual misconduct, they will try to paint the actor as a serial groper of women. Prosecutors say they have 19 other women who could testify that the Oscar-winning performer got handsy with them in bars, hotels or restaurants. But a judge says prosecutors can have only two additional women who accuse Gooding of misconduct take the stand. His trial is to begin on April 21.

TERRY JONES DIES; ORIGINAL MEMBER OF MONTY PYTHON TROUPE

LONDON (AP) — A founding member of the Monty Python comedy team has died. Terry Jones died last night at his home in London. He was 77 and had been suffering from dementia. A fellow member of the troupe, Michael Palin, says Jones was one of his “closest, most valued friends.” Palin added that not only was Jones “one of the funniest writer-performers of his generation,” he was “the complete Renaissance comedian.”

AEROSMITH DRUMMER SUES BANDMATES

BOSTON (AP) — There’s a definite lack of harmony among members of Aerosmith. Drummer Joey Kramer is suing his bandmates because they won't let him be part of pre-Grammy events this week. Kramer is a founding member of the band. His lawsuit says he’s been shut out of the band after hurting his ankle last year, causing him to miss shows. Kramer says the band told him he needed to earn his job back by re-auditioning for the band. But Kramer’s suit claims that when other members of the group like Steven Tyler and Joe Perry got hurt, they didn’t have to re-audition. Aerosmith is to receive the 2020 MusiCares Person of the Year award Friday in Los Angeles — and the band will do a medley at the Grammys on Sunday.

GRAMMY FORMER CEO COMPLAINS ABOUT OUSTER

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The ousted CEO of the Grammys is clapping back at the Recording Academy over her removal. Lawyers for Deborah Dugan says she was put on administrative leave after complaining about sexual harassment and pay disparities in the industry. They also say Dugan ran afoul of the Grammy bigwigs by calling out conflicts of interest in the nomination process for the awards. The upper echelon of the Grammy structure has been in turmoil since then-CEO Neil Portnow said women needed to “step up” if they wanted to win more awards. After facing criticism for the remark, Portnow later chose not to seek an extension on his contract — and was replaced by Dugan.

OSCARS PRESENTERS NAMED

LOS ANGELES (AP) — File this one under irony, maybe. The list of presenters at this year’s Oscar’s will be much more diverse than the field of nominees up for awards. As is its tradition, the motion picture academy has asked last year’s winners to present awards on this year’s show. Among those returning to hand out statuettes are Olivia Colman, Regina King and Mahershala Ali. Their presence will point out another, more unfortunate tradition — the Oscars’ lack of diversity. This year’s acting nominees list has just one person of color, Cynthia Erivo of “Harriet.”

PAMELA ANDERSON MARRIES JON PETERS

MALIBU, Calif. (AP) — Will the fifth time be the charm for Pamela Anderson and Jon Peters? Only time will tell. The Hollywood couple married Monday at a private ceremony in Malibu. It’s the fifth trip down the aisle for both. The two share some history that doesn’t involve four divorces; they first began dating more than 30 years ago before recently hooking up again.
