SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Women are expected to run for office in high numbers in 2020, but many of them face financial hurdles paying for child care while they campaign. Candidates for federal office can tap their campaign accounts to pay for it, but it's a patchwork at the state level. Just six states have laws specifically allowing the use of campaign money for child care. In most states, the law is silent on the issue and up to interpretation. Female candidates say the expense is an unnecessary barrier and shows why more women are needed in positions of power.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Authorities say a California man has died after an accident at a Utah ski resort on New Year’s Eve. Park City Mountain resort officials said Wednesday the 20-year-old from Sherman Oaks was pronounced dead by air ambulance crews after the afternoon accident on an intermediate-level trail. They are declining declined to identify the man. The Summit County Sheriff’s Office is investigating, but did not immediately release the man's identity to allow his family time to inform relatives. The resort is located east of Salt Lake City, near the site of the Sundance Film Festival set to begin later this month.

CRYSTAL BAY, Nev. (AP) — Two season pass holders at a Lake Tahoe-area ski resort have filed a lawsuit against the resort's owner over new parking fees they say were unjustly imposed. Officials at Northstar California Resort announced in October they would begin charging fees for the first time this season at a major parking lot near the premium parking area. The Tahoe Daily Tribune reports Crystal Bay attorney Steven Kroll filed the lawsuit in December accusing Vail Resorts of fraud and breach of contract. Kroll says they'd already purchased their season passes when the new policy was announced so they shouldn't retroactively be subject to the fees.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The parents of a Utah boy whose hand was bitten off by two dogs while he was playing in his backyard are suing the neighbors who they contend should have known their dogs were vicious and unsuitable for a residential neighborhood with children. Hope and John Brown's lawsuit filed Monday in Utah state court alleges the neighbors and owners of the Siberian Huskies were negligent along with the property owners and managers. The then 3-year-old boy lost part of his arm when the dogs bit him underneath a fence. No attorneys were listed in court documents for any of the defendants.
