SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Investigators say the driver of a tour bus that crashed near a national park in Utah, killing four Chinese tourists and injuring dozens more, was making his first trip for a company that only been in business for a short time. Pete Kotowski of the National Transportation Safety Board says the agency is researching the driver's background, license qualification and medical history and the company's hiring practices and inspection history.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The University of Utah has asked a judge to dismiss a lawsuit filed by the parents of a slain student. The family of Lauren McCluskey filed the $56 million suit against the university in June, saying the school hasn't taken responsibility for the death of their daughter last October at the hands of her ex-boyfriend. Lawyers for the university argue that McClusky's family doesn't have grounds to sue the school.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — City leaders in Salt Lake City are considering a new law that would cite people who ride electric scooters on sidewalks in certain parts of downtown. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that citations for sidewalk riders in parts of downtown, mandatory slow zones and curfews are under consideration. There are no formal rules governing the scooters, only a "temporary operating agreement" between the cities and companies that dictates how many scooters can be in the city and where they can be parked.
PROVO, Utah (AP) — A U.S. Supreme Court justice says the conventional wisdom that the court is split along partisan lines based on the political views of the president that appointed each justice is false. Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch spoke about civility at Brigham Young University on Friday refuting the notion that judges are just "like politicians with robes." Gorsuch says he doesn't recognize the Supreme Court reflected in media hinting at deep divisions among the nine jurists.
