This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

Washington Irving once wrote, "The grave buries every error, covers every defect, extinguishes every resentment — from its peaceful bosom spring none but fond regrets and tender recollections."

I thought of those words as I visited with Del Ballard, owner of Goff Mortuary in Midvale. He helps people arrange an opportunity for tender recollections in memory of a loved one.

Goff Mortuary is a funeral home that provides everything from traditional funerals to cremations. The company has no cemetery of its own but does have access to all cemeteries where families might choose to bury their loved one. The mortuary can also help coordinate burial plots and arrange details with the cemetery.

The Goff family started the business in 1915 as a combination furniture manufacturing company and mortuary—a common practice at the time. However, as the community grew, the Goffs eventually steered away from furniture manufacturing to focus only on being a mortuary. The family later sold the business to another owner, whom Del purchased it from 25 years ago. He chose to keep the Goff name since it is well-established and has such a long tradition behind it.

Del says he was enticed into the mortuary business 44 years ago because he thought it would be a profitable endeavor. He quickly learned that it wasn't as lucrative as he originally thought and it requires someone to be available on a 24-hour basis to respond to customer inquiries. However, he has found enjoyment in his profession and the opportunity it gives him to interact with people.

Losing a loved one is painful, but Del works to ensure families' needs are taken care by offering a high level of service and professionalism during such a difficult time.

For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
