Monday did not turn out to be the day convention delegates had expected. It wasn't what reporters planned for, either.

Organizers slashed the convention agenda and suspended most everything they had prepared in deference to the threat of a catastrophe on the Gulf Coast.

The threat has passed. New Orleans is still standing.

But Republicans have lost two days of their anticipated national close-up to a storm named Gustav that crowded them off front pages and TV screens.

Notwithstanding Gustav's fizzle-- the storm may be a reminder that neither politicians, voters, nor governments are in control everything.

Neither is the media.
