FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The University of North Dakota is looking for ways to save money in its athletic department, and it could include a change in conference affiliation. New school President Mark Kennedy is taking inventory of athletics after the department ended the fiscal year with a shortfall of about $1.4 million. He has ordered a campus committee to analyze several factors, including the number of sports, the costs of the programs and the conference landscape.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Idaho's unemployment rate in July slightly bumped up from last month to 3.8 percent. The Idaho Department of Labor in a news release Friday says continued demand for workers and an increase in people looking for work caused the rate to move from the previous 3.7 percent.

LOWMAN, Idaho (AP) — Firefighters on Friday are working on structure protection at the central Idaho ghost town of Pioneerville as a 134-square-mile wildfire approaches. Fire officials say the fire grew about 7 square miles in the last day with the west flank becoming the most active as it burned timber in the Jackson Peak area.

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — A ban on fishing, boating and other activities on Montana's Yellowstone River could last for months after an invasive parasite killed thousands of fish. The closure includes a 183-mile stretch of the river and hundreds of miles of tributaries. State officials have retracted earlier statements that fish had been killed in Yellowstone National Park.
