Clinton, Trump to make dueling economic speeches this week...IS claims machete attack...A-Rod to hang it up

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton will deliver what aides are billing as a major economic speech on Thursday in Detroit. Cinton's appearance is set to follow a speech by Republican rival Donald Trump on what he would do to improve economic growth. Trump's speech is set for tomorrow in the same city. The dueling Detroit addresses come as new polls show Clinton gaining ground on economic issues.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Two of Donald Trump's supporters are offering positive reinforcement after he reversed himself and endorsed House Speaker Paul Ryan, Sen. John McCain and Sen. Kelly Ayotte (AY'-aht). Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich says Trump has "gotten the messages" from other Republicans to unify the divided GOP. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani says it move shows that Trump realizes that "you've got to be able to reach out to the entire party." Gingrich spoke on "Fox News Sunday" and Giuliani on ABC's "This Week."

BRUSSELS (AP) — Belgian prosecutors say the man who wounded two policewomen with a machete yesterday was a 33-year-old Algerian known to police for criminal offenses, but not for extremist acts. The Islamic State group says the attack was carried out by one of its "soldiers." The man was fatally shot by a third officer following the attack outside the main police station in the city of Charleroi (shahr-lur-WAH').

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran has executed a nuclear scientist who defected to the U.S. and returned to the Islamic Republic a year later under mysterious circumstances. That announcement today is the first acknowledgment by Iran that it secretly detained, tried and convicted Shahram Amiri, a man authorities once heralded as a hero. An Iranian judiciary spokesman says Amiri was convicted of spying for giving secret information to the United States.

NEW YORK (AP) — Alex Rodriguez will play his final major league game Friday with the New York Yankees, then become a special adviser and instructor with the team. Rodriguez and the team announced today that he will play against Tampa Bay at Yankee Stadium on Friday night before ending his career as one of the most prolific and polarizing figures in baseball history. The 41-year-old designated hitter, a three-time AL MVP and 14-time All-Star, has been in a slump that has left him on the bench for most of the past month.
