NEW YORK (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump begins the first full week of the general election campaign in a familiar place -- surrounded by controversy. Trump has been admonished by Democrats and Republicans alike over breaking a major American political and societal taboo over the weekend -- feuding with the bereaved parents of a decorated Muslim Army captain killed in Iraq. A source says Trump was genuinely surprised, believing that he was attacked first.

LOCKHART, Texas (AP) — A Missouri police officer says the pilot of a hot air balloon that crashed in Texas had had trouble with the law -- a 2000 arrest on a felony driving while intoxicated charge. And the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported in 2008 that the Better Business Bureau had warned consumers about doing business with him. Investigators are working the crash site where 16 people were killed after the balloon hit power lines.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The once picturesque Main Street of Ellicott City, Maryland, is anything but today in the wake of a flash flood over the weekend that killed two people who were swept away. Officials say recovery will take months and money -- millions of dollars. Five buildings were destroyed and nearly every home and business took damage.

VIENNA (AP) — Austria is placing soldiers as embassy guards in Vienna to free up police for possible anti-terrorism operations and other duties. The troopers took up their new duties today with more than 100 guarding two dozen embassies and other international locations, including the United Nations office. Army spokesman Kurt Wagner says the soldiers are armed and can use force in emergencies.

TOKYO (AP) — There was a national moment of panic in Japan today over a false alert of a major earthquake in the Tokyo area. The announcement of a magnitude 9.1 earthquake was cancelled seconds after being sent and the Japanese Meteorological Agency is investigating. One official says a seismograph may have been hit by lightning.
