LOCKHART, Texas (AP) — National Transportation Safety Board investigators are sending 14 personal electronic devices to Washington for analysis after they were recovered from the crash site of a hot air balloon in Central Texas, not far from Austin. NTSB member Robert Sumwalt says ground crew members will be interviewed starting today. The crash killed 16 people when the balloon hit power lines and caught fire.
BIG SUR, Calif. (AP) — The Big Sur wildfire isn't letting up while a new blaze in California's Central Valley damaged homes and forced hundreds of evacuations. The new fire has damaged some of the 200 homes evacuated while the Big Sur blaze has destroyed 57. More than 5,000 firefighters are battling the Big Sur wildfire that killed a bulldozer operator working the fire line.
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — A 16-month study commissioned by The Associated Press finds danger in the waterways of Rio where some Olympic competitions will be held. With the Games beginning Friday, the study finds the water is filthy as ever, contaminated with raw human sewage teeming with dangerous viruses and bacteria from untreated sewage. And even the famed golden beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana present risks.
CHICAGO (AP) — Trampolines are increasingly popular but more people are also finding there's a down side. A study shows annual U.S. emergency room visits jumped 12-fold for trampoline park-related injuries over five years. Injuries included broken legs, neck sprains and concussions but 90 percent of the injured were treated and released. The injury rate was more stable for home trampolines. The study is in Pediatrics.
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — There's a slightly unusual event scheduled in Indonesia later this month to mark the nation's Independence Day. Officials say they plan to send as many as 71 foreign vessels that were seized for illegal fishing to the bottom of the sea, including boats from the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and China. Several locations will have simultaneous sinkings. Indonesia takes a tough stance against illegal fishing.
