LOCKHART, Texas (AP) — The National Transportation Safety Board says it will investigate today's hot-air balloon crash in Texas that resulted in a "significant loss of life." Officials aren't saying how many people died, but at least 16 were believed to be on board and no one is known to have survived. A woman who lives nearby says she heard popping sounds, then saw a fireball shooting into the air beneath a row of high-capacity power lines.

BIG SUR, Calif. (AP) — Fire officials say a wildfire burning near California's Big Sur coast has destroyed 57 homes and is threatening 2,000 more. More than 5,000 firefighters are battling the week-old wildfire that also killed a bulldozer operator working the fire line. Officials say the wildfire has grown to 52 square miles and is likely to burn until the end of August.

SEATTLE (AP) — A gunman who attacked a group of young adults at a suburban Seattle home early today had just broken up with one of the victims. That's according to the grandmother of one of the witnesses. Susan Gemmer says her 18-year-old granddaughter told her the shooter killed two people at a fire pit before firing more shots from the roof. In all, three people were killed and another injured. State troopers later arrested a 19-year-old suspect on an interstate three counties away.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — An Indianapolis police officer faces an attempted murder charge after authorities say he shot a detective investigating a domestic violence incident involving the officer and his estranged wife and then fled to Ohio. The 42-year-old officer, Adrian Aurs, has been suspended without pay, pending termination from the department. The detective was hospitalized in good condition with elbow and back injuries.

KRAKOW, Poland (AP) — Pope Francis is calling on young people to not be "couch potatoes" but to take risks as they seek to build a better world. Addressing hundreds of thousands of young pilgrims in Poland, the pope spoke of a paralysis that comes from seeking convenience and from "confusing happiness with a sofa." He told them, "we didn't come into this world to vegetate," but rather, "to leave a mark."
