Democrats look to win over doubters...Some Sanders backers still not on board...Hundreds of thousands see pope

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Hillary Clinton's speech to the Democratic National Committee tonight will come before a crowd of cheering delegates eager to see history made in the November election. But her real audience will be millions of voters who may welcome her experience but question her character. Daughter Chelsea Clinton will introduce the nominee tonight, painting a personal picture of her mother.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — As Hillary Clinton prepares to accept her party's presidential nomination tonight, the split within the Democratic Party still has not healed. At a rally today in Philadelphia, supporters of Bernie Sanders asked Clinton fans to explain why anyone should back her for president. They then booed the Clinton backers who tried to speak. But just a few hundred people gathered for today's rally -- a big decrease from a day earlier.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Attorney General Loretta Lynch says Americans can pay tribute to the sacrifices of three slain law enforcement officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, by standing together in unity and rejecting resentment and anger. Lynch hailed the officers as heroes during a memorial vigil today at a Baton Rouge church. Vice President Joe Biden also attended.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are closing mostly higher as investors work through an uneven batch of corporate earnings. Facebook added 1 percent after the social media company reported earnings that easily surpassed estimates. Ford sank 8 percent after reporting weak results and warning investors that things could get worse in the second half of the year. Oil and gas companies were broadly lower as energy prices continued to fall. The Dow fell 15 points. The S&P edged up three. The Nasdaq gained 15 points.

CZESTOCHOWA, Poland (AP) — A Vatican spokesman says more than 500,000 young people from around the world have joined Pope Francis at a pep rally in a meadow in southern Poland. The pontiff is making his first trip to that country for Catholic World Youth Day events this week. Earlier today, Polish church officials estimated 600,000 faithful turned out at the nation's holiest shrine for a Mass.
