PROVO, Utah (AP) — A Utah businessman has become the likely replacement for state Sen. Al Jackson, a Highland Republican who resigned to move east with his family.
The Daily Herald reports (http://bit.ly/2acPxwe ) that research scientist Afa Palu dropped out of the race to replace Jackson Wednesday. The move leaves Red Hanger Cleaners co-owner Dan Hemmert unopposed for the Aug. 6 midterm vacancy election.
Jackson resigned earlier this month. His unfinished term ends on Dec. 31.
Hemmert won a Republican primary race in June to earn a place on the November ballot for Jackson's next term. Libertarian Joe Buchman and Independent American Curt Crosby are also running for the seat.
After August 6, Hemmert will have to be approved by Gov. Gary Herbert before taking office.
Palu didn't respond to requests for comment Wednesday.
