She announced it yesterday following disclosure of an email suggesting the party favored Hillary Clinton during the primaries, instead of remaining neutral. It's a crack in the effort to portray unity as the national presidential nominating convention kicks off today. Big protests are planned.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A pair of wildfires, one in Southern California and another about 300 miles up the coast have destroyed at least 24 homes. Just north of Los Angeles, officials say flames raced down a steep hillside "like a freight train," leaving the smoldering remains of 18 homes and forcing thousands to flee. The central California fire also forced evacuations and destroyed six homes.
ANSBACH, Germany (AP) — Residents say police in Germany today raided an asylum shelter where a man who blew himself up near a music festival apparently lived. Police say a dozen people were injured when the 27-year-old Syrian blew himself up in the outside seating area of a wine bar near the open-air concert that had earlier denied him entry. The man had previously been denied asylum in Germany.
SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Sentencing is scheduled today for a California man who aspired to join the Islamic State group in Syria. Adam Dandach pleaded guilty last year to attempting to provide material support to a terror group and lying on his passport application. Federal prosecutors are seeking a 20-year prison term for the 2-year-old.
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — New Zealand is declaring war and hopes to win by 2050. The objective is the complete eradication of one of mankind's greatest pests -- rats. Prime Minister John Key today announced the ambitious plan that also includes other nuisance animals including possums and stoats, a member of the weasel family. Some scientists say it will be really hard to do.
