DNC chair won't preside at convention sessions...Protests get underway in hot Philadelphia...Wildfire burns 18 structures, threatens 1,500

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz apparently won't be presiding over sessions of the party's national convention when it opens tomorrow. A member of the DNC's rules committee says the panel has voted to give Rep. Marcia Fudge of Ohio that role, electing her convention chairwoman. The DNC rules committee member spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of internal party affairs. Bernie Sanders supporters are angry after leaked DNC emails suggested that the committee favored Hillary Clinton.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia's mayor says he's not sure if the heat wave baking Philadelphia will lead to smaller crowds at marches and rallies before the Democratic National Convention, but he's urging people to limit time outdoors. Mayor Jim Kenney says tents and water will be available 24 hours a day to protesters in FDR Park, near the convention site. Several marches and rallies are hitting the streets Sunday, including a march for clean energy and one supporting Bernie Sanders. Thousands are expected at each.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say a California wildfire has burned 18 structures and threatens about 1,500 homes in canyons north of Los Angeles. The blaze has blackened more than 34 square miles of dry brush on the edge of the Angeles National Forest. It's just 10 percent contained. Shifting winds are sending smoke from the fire away from greater Los Angeles and into desert communities, where residents are being warned about poor air quality.

BERLIN (AP) — German police say a Syrian asylum-seeker has killed a woman with a machete and wounded two others outside a bus station in southwestern Germany. Witnesses told police that the 21-year-old man, who was known to police, was having an argument with the woman before attacking her. The motive isn't known. The attack comes a week after five people were wounded in an ax attack in southern Germany, and days after a gunman killed nine people in Munich.

PARIS (AP) — Chris Froome is celebrating his third Tour de France title in four years. The Kenyan-born British rider finished safely at the back of the main pack during today's mostly ceremonial final stage ending in Paris.
