MIAMI (AP) — Hillary Clinton says her running mate "is qualified to step into this job and lead from Day One." And she says Sen. Tim Kaine "is a progressive who likes to get things done." At a rally with Clinton today, Kaine, a bilingual former Virginia governor, detailed his life in public service, saying "I like to fight for right." Kaine greeted the largely Hispanic audience at Florida International University in Spanish.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Bernie Sanders campaign is assuring its delegates they will not miss votes if they attend a private meeting with him before the start of the Democratic National Convention on Monday. A text message to Sanders' 1,900 delegates says they should "not worry about being in the convention hall for the opening gavel." Delegates will vote on the Democratic platform and rules that day.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) — Major battles are under way in California against two large wildfires. The fire in mountains just north of Los Angeles and its suburbs is a threat to 1,000 homes. It's already scorched more than 17 square miles. Another fire near Big Sur on California's scenic Central Coast also threatens 1,000 homes and the Monterey County community of Palo Colorado has been ordered evacuated. That blaze covers almost 3 square miles.

PHOENIX (AP) — A 12-year-old boy has died after he was out hiking in north Phoenix amid triple-digit temperatures. Phoenix police say the boy was hiking with an adult male Friday afternoon in the Sonoran Desert Preserve when he became ill. Firefighters responded, and he was airlifted to Phoenix Children's Hospital. The boy's death comes in the middle of a summer that has yielded several heat-related deaths across Arizona.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) — A man who was held captive in Lebanon for more than six years until he was freed and returned home to become professor emeritus at Colorado State University has died. According to the university, Thomas Sutherland died in Fort Collins on Friday at the age of 85. Sutherland was a dean at American University in Beirut when he was taken hostage by Islamic terrorists in 1985 and held for more than six years.
