Kaine appears with Clinton...Flap over superdelegates at DNC... Baton Rouge sheriff's deputy laid to rest

MIAMI. (AP) — Tim Kaine is being introduced to voters ahead of this week's Democratic National Convention. The Virginia senator who's been tapped as Hillary Clinton's running mate joined the party's presumptive presidential nominee at an event today in the crucial battleground state of Florida. Clinton said Kaine cares more about making a difference than making headlines -- in her words-- "everything that Donald Trump and Mike Pence are not."

PHILADELPHIA (AP) —An effort to fully eliminate superdelegates in future elections appears to be going nowhere at the Democratic National Convention. An amendment to get rid of party insiders who can vote for the candidate of their choice at the convention failed in the rules committee today. It did, however, earn enough support to force a floor vote at the convention. The amendment was offered by a Bernie Sanders delegate.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The Baton Rouge sheriff's deputy killed six days ago is being remembered as a man who ran to help another officer when he could have stayed safe in the convenience store where he was working off-duty. All 1,500 seats were filled in the Baptist church where a public funeral was held today for Deputy Brad Garafola (gehr-uh-FOH'-luh). The walls were lined with additional mourners, many of them police from across the country.

CENTER LINE, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say police seized a dozen rifles and six handguns from the home of a suburban Detroit man after a witness reported the man said he wanted to kill police officers. The Warren police commissioner tells The Detroit News that the man made the threat during a mental health discussion and has been committed to a mental health facility. The man hasn't been charged. The case remains under investigation.

DALLAS (AP) — A guitar owned by Eric Clapton has sold at auction for $45,000 and the proceeds will be used to pay the medical bills of a well-known Texas musician whose wife recently died of leukemia. Heritage Auctions in Dallas says the high bid for the 2014 Fender Stratocaster electric guitar, used last year at a London concert, was telephoned. Money from the auction will help Johnny Nicholas cover medical bills from his wife's leukemia treatment.
