Trump, Pence nominated ... Another officer lost ... Close to breaking Fossett's record

CLEVELAND (AP) — They're now the Republican Party's official team for the November presidential election. Delegates at the Republican National Convention have formally nominated Donald Trump and his running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence. Trump addressed the convention briefly by videotape, thanking them for nominating him as the party's White House candidate. He told them, "This is a movement, but we have to go all the way."

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — It's the second time Kansas City, Kansas has lost a police officer this year to a shooting. Authorities say Capt. Robert Melton was shot in his vehicle Tuesday when he encountered a man who fit the description of a suspect in a drive-by shooting. The man was arrested shortly after the officer was shot. Melton had served in the police honor guard at the funeral of a fellow officer who was fatally shot in May.

CHICAGO (AP) — Bullets are hitting more children this year in Chicago than they have in the past. Police records show that through June, 15 children younger than 10 had been shot. That's seven more young shooting victims than the same span last year. And four more young children have been shot this month, including a 6-year-old girl who was sitting on a porch when bullets flew.

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — A 65-year-old Russian adventurer is battling sleep deprivation and freezing temperatures as he tries to fly solo in a balloon around the world nonstop. Fedor Konyukhov has drifted more than halfway around the world since he lifted off from Western Australia state July 12. His son Oscar says his father is on track to return to earth somewhere in Australia on Sunday — 12 days after he started. The previous record of 13 days and eight hours was set by American adventurer Steve Fossett in 2002.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — He was a writer-director whose TV hits included "Happy Days" and "Laverne & Shirley." Garry Marshall has died at age 81. His publicist says Marshall died Tuesday in a hospital in Burbank, California, of complications from pneumonia after having a stroke. Henry Winkler, who starred as Fonzie on "Happy Days," saluted Marshall in a tweet as "larger than life, funnier than most, wise and the definition of friend."
