NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump has introduced Mike Pence as his running mate, calling the Indiana governor his "first choice." At a formal announcement in New York Saturday, Trump also acknowledged that one of the reasons he'd selected Pence was to promote unity within the Republican Party. Pence headed back to Indiana later in the day, where he urged supporters to vote for Trump whom he called a good man who will make a "great president."
CLEVELAND (AP) — Cleveland streets are already being blocked off in advance of the Republican National Convention. The U.S. Secret Service has a hardened security perimeter in place around Quicken Loans Arena, the convention venue. Ohio National Guard members have been staffing barricades blocking or restricting streets surrounding police headquarters and the Cleveland Convention Center.
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey's president is demanding the United States extradite an exiled Muslim cleric living in Pennsylvania, who he says was behind a failed military coup. In a televised speech Saturday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan (REH'-jehp TY'-ihp UR'-doh-wahn) says Turkey has never rejected a U.S. extradition request for "terrorists." But Secretary of State John Kerry has told Turkey's foreign minister that the country must respect due process as it investigates the failed coup.
COALDALE, Colo. (AP) — A wildfire burning west of Pueblo, Colorado, has chased residents from 140 homes in the town of Coaldale. Strong winds and lower humidity have driven the flames across 25 square miles. Residents have been told it could be a week or more before it's safe enough to return.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Cincinnati police say a 5-year-old boy has died after being shot in the head in his home. They say the child was with his 11-year-old brother on the second floor when the incident happened Saturday. The Cincinnati Enquirer reports the older brother brought the boy downstairs to his mother, who called 911.
