Turkish PM: 130 arrested in plot...Trump picks Pence...12-year-old suspect in Baton Rouge gun theft

ISTANBUL (AP) — Turkey's prime minister says more than 130 people have been arrested in a coup plot, but the situation is "getting better every minute." Speaking on Turkey's NTV television, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim says he ordered the "annihilation" of military planes used by coup plotters. He's calling for people to remain in the streets to support the government. NTV television is quoting the prosecutor's office in Ankara as saying at least 42 people have been killed in the capital.

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — A lawyer for the Turkish government says there are indications that a cleric living in exile in Pennsylvania had "direct involvement" in tonight's attempted coup. Fethullah Gulen gained notice in Turkey 50 years ago, promoting a philosophy that blended a mystical form of Islam with staunch advocacy of democracy, education, science and interfaith dialogue. The president of Alliance for Shared Values, which promotes Gulen's ideas, denies he was involved.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump has announced Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate, adding an experienced politician with deep Washington connections to the Republican presidential ticket. Pence spent 12 years in Congress before being elected governor and his demeanor is as calm as Trump's is fiery. The two men have scheduled a news conference for Saturday in New York. Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton met with three potential running mates at her Washington home: Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office says the fourth suspect in a pawn shop gun theft has been arrested. The suspect is a 12-year-old male. He has been charged with simple burglary and theft of a firearm. Police arrested three other suspects in the burglary last weekend in which eight handguns were stolen. State and local law-enforcement say the guns were part of a credible threat to harm police officers.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has notified Congress that 200 U.S. troops are in Uganda waiting to be sent to South Sudan, if needed. Obama earlier told lawmakers that he sent 47 U.S. troops to South Sudan amid renewed fighting there. Obama says "it is not possible to know" the scope and duration of the deployments needed to protect U.S. citizens and property in South Sudan.
