NICE, France (AP) — Rallies and vigils are being planned in different parts of France to mourn those who lost their lives when a man drove a truck through crowds of revelers celebrating Bastille Day in Nice (nees). President Francois Hollande has declared three days of national mourning, and flags have been lowered to half-staff in Paris and in Nice. The Eiffel Tower will be lit red-white-and-blue this evening to honor the victims of last night's attack. Officials say 84 people were killed and more than 200 wounded, including 25 who are on life support.

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Paul Ryan is welcoming Donald Trump's decision to tap Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate. Ryan says "we need someone who is steady and secure in his principles" who can "can cut through the noise and make a compelling case for conservatism." Ryan says the former congressman comes from "the heart of America," and the speaker says he'll do everything he can to help the GOP ticket win in November.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Alton Sterling's funeral has begun with a gospel choir singing hymns — and a warning from a family spokesman that if people want to protest, they should leave. Gary Chambers, the master of ceremonies for the funeral, told mourners in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, that the event is meant to be a celebration of Sterling's life, not an opportunity for demonstrations about his death. The 37-year-old black man was shot to death by two white police officers as he was pinned to the pavement outside a convenience store.

PLANO, Texas (AP) — Law enforcement personnel from across the country have gathered in the Dallas suburb of Plano for the funeral of Michael Krol (krohl), one of the five police officers killed a week ago in Dallas. A large U.S. flag hung from the ladders of two fire trucks to honor the 40-year-old Michigan native who moved to Dallas to become a police officer. His mother says he was a caring person who wanted to help others.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has updated its advice about preventing the spread of the Zika virus, after a New York City woman infected her male partner through sex. It's the first time female-to-male transmission of the germ has been documented. The CDC now advises pregnant women to use protection if their sex partner has traveled to a Zika-infected region, whether the partner is a man or a woman. Infection during pregnancy can lead to severe birth defects.
